Wanted. First big bike after Direct Access. Budget £1000.

Not wanting to come over doom and gloom,but at 22 years of age with a new licence get a list of possible bikes together and then ring around for insurance quotes, as they are likely to blow a decent sized hole into available funds.
You might pick up a 1000cc cheap, but running it might be a different story.

+1 for this suggestion - the F650 was my first big bike after i did direct access.

or a cheaper insurance option might be an XT600

my XTZ750 super tenere is for sale in that price range, but i think it's a bit big and heavy for a first big bike...

The Laverda 750s on the left will be for sale aswell, but will take longer as i have it stripped down .
But the Triumph is a good runner , never been crashed, has a givi luggage rack fitted and about 30k miles .... PM me if interested

After I done my test at the end of 2011 (restricted), I upgraded from a 125 Varadero to a F650 Funduro, I had to get a restrictor kit on, but I have found it to be much fun, I can keep up at motorway speeds, Its great on petrol and it pulls like a wee train. When I was looking at bikes I thought that I would be stuck on a "road" bike, which I didn't want. So to get this I was well happy.
This is just my pennies worth, And the insurance is cheaper than on the wee Varadero

Hi duncan,

My advice is to get a naked bike, bandit 600 as someone reccommended. It will be man enough for what you need. Also help keep speed down so you don't pick up points on yur shiney license. After all you don't want to loose the license eh.

Merlin999 – That looks a nice bike and even 250 quid more it’s still out of my budget, I can imagine you’ll shift that no problem. But if my situation changes and you’ve still got it in April, I’ll message you about it.

Bonniebird – I’ve actually sat on that Dominator at Durham bikes, it’s been there for more than a year now, and I think my twin brother has plans to buy it for when we do some trips in the summer. But maybe I could offer the dealer a best offer knowing that they’ve had it for ages.

Itchy/Hacknslash – I really like Bandits but alas, the girlfriends father has one and for that reason alone I can’t get one, in order to the stick it to the old man, but they are great bikes.

Exrm193- Thanks for the heads up on the Fazer, they do seem in good supply on gumtree, I’ll keep a look out for one when I’m buying.

Tony23/Orlando Orange/Baby V – I like the Funduro and Stradas but should I expect to be able to buy one for a grand? I thought BMWs would hold a greater price. And what’s it like maintaining it with new parts, are they expensive?

Bushman UK – I think a 900 would be a step too far for insurance purposes, but it looks like a great bike.

Mark1150 – Got some insurance quotes for various 600s with 3rd party fire and theft, all come in at about 200 quid for me.

Throttled – That link of that place in Falkirk was great, have you dealt with them before? They had some cheap Yamaha Diversions on offer

Gutterat- You’re right, student loans are for student things, but my jobs pay the rent and bills, so I’m just going to use my last ever instalment to buy a bike which will make my getting around and summer much more bearable.
