For those of you coming up the M6 and M74, rather than using the motorway with all the traffic and trucks (especially if its raining) there is a fairly quiet and fast alternative.

Come off M6 at Junction 39, north of Tebay services, and then follow A6 north. Takes you through Penrith and then on to Carlisle. At Carlisle rejoin M6 junction 42 (you will pass Golden Fleece truck stop and come to the main roundabout for rejoining motorway) this is to avoid riding through Carlisle town centre. Cheap fuel here at supermarket. Cant remember if its Tesco or not. If you need fuel take exit for Carlisle and you will see supermarket on your right 200 yards off the roundabout.

Follow M6 north of the border onto M74. As you cross border you will quickly come to Gretna services, come off here and at top of slip road take a right on roundabout. You come to a junction, turn left and head north on the B7076. It become the B7078 as you go further north.

Follow this road north to Cairn Lodge Happendon services and rejoin M74 as the road gets a bit of a pain after this. Pass Lockerbie, Moffat etc.

Essentially you run parrallel to the motorway on the old dual cariageway. Quiet, fast and some pleasant views over moors. The big thing is the rain, north of Moffat the M74 tends to have a lot of standing water and it is a nightmare on a bike, especially with all the lorry traffic.

You rejoin the M74 just south of Lesmahagow junction 10.

If you fancy this road and I havent made sense drop me a message for clearer info.
