Chilterns Muddy Ride Out
Re: Chilterns Muddy Ride Out
Cheers Mad cow
I know each region has different trails thats why we come along..and well apart from the "chilton hills" its all flat :cheer: Wales to me is extreme...damn huge bolders and steep hills and "bog devils" that suck you in after all we are on big bikes but that dont stop me trying to go where Enduro`s go.. :S ..
Dont fancy following a camera 2 man set up been there before ...whatever happens ..happens your area so your choice`s..
And yep rain does make it interesting just like morning dew on a summers day...for those early birds..

Buckinghamshire is sadly devoid of byways so not much in the Chilterns until you get to the Northern extremities into Beds/Herts.
But you do get London Clay over Chalk.... now that can be fun in the wet!
But having said that the big bikes and/or road tyre brigade shouldn't worry as a lot of Hertfordshire lanes have been repaired/resurfaced with crushed concrete, which has weathered into some nice non-scary lanes.
This sort of thing.....(now what did I say about unsuitable tyres?)

I think it is great that we have such a wealth of talent here in the Chilterns, and if it wasn't for this site, we would never have knownMad Cow wrote:Buckinghamshire is sadly devoid of byways so not much in the Chilterns until you get to the Northern extremities into Beds/Herts.

But now I can :woohoo:
I'm up for some dirty riding and happy to lead a group if needed as I know the lanes quite well (OK very well, I've been green laning in the area for the last 25 years (often on totally unsuitable bikes/tyres) and I'm the Herts and Beds rep for the Green Lane Association (GLASS) and no that doesn't mean I'll be in the 4x4!
Would be great to join your ride out on the Sunday!
More Extreme the better! Enjoyed the Blue Light do!

Re: Chilterns Muddy Ride Out
So, aside from the fact I might not make it there at all, as it's dependant on my wife's health, I'd love to join the "I've got no experience and road tyres" ride on the Sunday morning if there is one.

You should be fine on your 'ickle Derbi!
Unless it's peeing down (or just has) you can do 90% of the lanes on road tyres.
The first bike I ever rode on a green lane in Hertfordshire was a 1983 Kawasaki GPz 750 on Pirelli Phantoms (Now I'm showing my age) OK I had to get pushed a few times but that was before most of the lanes round here had been resurfaced
Here's a few of the lanes that might be on the route:
Dead Woman's Lane near Preston (No not in Lancashire)
Icknield Way near Ashwell on the Herts/Cambs border (not sure if we'll get this far)
Great Munden Byway 46 near Stag Hall Farm (F800GS on Battlewings)
Cotton Lane near Benington (F800GS on Battlewings)
Tewin Byway 39 near Datchworth (XT600E on Trailwings)
Hatfield Byway 56 near Wheathampstead (XT600E now on Tourances)

Re: Chilterns Muddy Ride Out
So, I'll now definitely be there Friday - Sunday and given the choice I'd rather be off-road than on, which leaves me slightly confused (and probably bring a pita).
Saturday's for those with a bit of experience and Sunday's for those who might not have?
Probably best to put me down for Sunday then but maybe have a chat Saturday depending on the weather? All those misspent years mountain biking every bridleway in the South-East have to help somehow now I've realised bikes should have motors.
