Echo the comments about Salisbury Plain. I'm new to this lark and have been to the Plain 4-5 times over summer, progressively getting more confident each time. The big northern loop over the top is probably 30k in total, but then you can criss cross as much as you want as long as there is no firing (check before you go). Beware of the BOATs in wet weather. That chalk mud/clay is horrible. Various camping options and lots of pub food.

GC, got any reccomendations on camping sites, last time I went I camped at Brades Acre and it was effing awfull, the owners moved me from the quiet corner I arrived at (plenty of spaces) and stuck me on their front lawn close to the road where I had to endure traffic noise and their friendly social gathering of families all evening.
I prefer somewhere where you can just be left alone in peace.
