my gs at marmolada some 8 years ago...i later returned 5 years later and the ice field behind had melted back so far it was occasionally exposing war dead from the nasty italian aus

Marmolada scenery is amazing.

I first went to Fox glacier in New Zealand in 89/90.
When I returned in (I think) 2004, the foot of the glacier must have been about a mile further up.

Indeed. This photo was taken a month or so ago on the Mer de Glace, above Chamonix - there were still a lot of steps to go down before we got to the level of the glacier and that's only 9 years. Crazy.
