Whatever the reason they’re pretty popular in Europe. These are two I’ve seen several times.

I went past a few of these in the States and asked the same question.

It turns out that all of the covered bridges are made of wood and wooden bridges last much longer if you cover them from the elements. When the roof starts to rot, just replace the roof, not the whole bridge.
