Not my DIY, but someone else's.

Last summer we welcomed a swallow family fo the first time since we moved here.

Early this spring, and enterprising wren family 'borrowed' the empty nest and made their own modifications.

Very nice Steve but you only get 9 out of 10 for the gate the brace should run from bottom left to top right :D :D

Bugger......you're right!
After I made it I decided to hinge it from the left side rather than the right side. During the faffing about it ended up upside down.
I didn't notice...until now. Thanks for that it's going to drive me mad!

Turning it upside down won't solve it unless you want the slats on the inside... :|

Structurally, the gate is triangulated, so it should not make any difference to its strength or performance, which way the brace is.

There are a few option if it is annoying, visually.

nice work, btw.

do you file (to sharpen) the front of the tooth .. or the back?
do bike wheel hang off the spokes .. or compress them ..
does a triangle pull or push, at the joints
do hanger struts hold the middle of the truss up.. or does the apex pull the middle of the cross beam up ..
`convention` is often that … convention .. but may not actually reflect the (triangle of ) forces set up

Ideally if made of timber, the cross brace should be in compression, so again ideally it’s wrong. On a small gate it will probably make little difference. However it would annoy the hell out of me too. Just looks wrong. But, if it was a tension wire. OK. Looks a great outside project though.
