Got roofer booked, but got to wait around six weeks as he's quite busy.
I'm happy with that , at least this chaps knows what he's on about, gave us a detailed itemized written quote , replacing lead to back gutter , remove & repoint two ridge tiles , chase out site stepped flashings & repoint , recement round top of chimney pot , replace two broken tiles ( which he spotted while inspecting chimney for leak) these are now wear near chimney so not part of the problem.

Re: Lead flashing
I had a similar prob at my last house a few years ago which was due to the mortar in the chimney brickwork cracking up, including around the flashing. Not obvious until up close. I raked the (very) loose bits out and repointed and the job was a goodun. An awful lot cheaper than new leadwork.

Re: Lead flashing
as with above having worked as a roofer many years ago id start by raking out the mortar and repointing lead can be difficult to work but there are lead alternatives now which are pretty good
