I think it is the other way round - we are born extremely selfish, and need to be taught to be considerate of others.
Babies are entirely self-centred. If they are comfortable, they sleep. If not, they wail loudly until someone fixes it. Not a thought about whether mum/dad is asleep/busy/putting feet up in front of corrie. Good parenting includes very gradually teaching more considerate behaviour.
Unfortunately, that means that poor parenting almost inevitably means that babies never learn consideration and grow into self centred adults.
