If you look at the stats for 'closed cases', that is where people either recover or die, 18% of people who get it die. Compared to influenza with a death rate of 0.2%, its a huge difference. And according to an analyst on BBC world service, these figures do not take into account people who die at home or in care homes.

So if 80% of the global population get it (as is speculated could happen), and 18% of those die, you're looking at a death toll almost equivalent to the entire population of India.

Barely noticable? Of course, it may not happen, but the virus has already mutated into a 2nd strain. If it continues to mutate every 3 months like it has so far, and a vaccine is 18 months away after undergoing clinical trials, the number could be even higher.

If you ignore all the 'cases' figures and concentrate only on deaths you get the best picture - all the other figures are of variable and indeterminate accuracy.

So, the death rate figures look to be heading towards 3-5%, depending upon the demographics, as it strikes the over 50s much harder.
UK population is about 67 million.
4% of that is about 2.7 million, and they will mostly be grandparents !
World population is about 7.7 billion.
4% of that is about 300 million worldwide.

Now google what happened during the 1918 flu pandemic - about 2 billion world population then and somewhere between 17 and 50 million deaths.
Its about the same scale and time has taught nothing even though we are supposed to be more advanced now.

You can't compare deaths against infections, because some of those currently infected will die and some will recover. The only accurate way of establishing a percentage is to use closed cases, because infected people either live or die.

I know we're all getting bored now that we can't roam free but why concentrate on death percentages? If I know the exact figures for infection, deaths, recovery etc etc and I know the location of the deadliest or safest places in the World .......... it adds nothing to my Life. Having the 'knowledge' may make me feel more powerful and in control but the reality is that we can't travel to the safest place with the best recovery rates so all that knowledge can do is give us anxiety.
I can't help feeling that the UK is in the calm before the storm so instead of searching for answers that don't exist and whilst the 'World obsessed with gain' is on pause why not take the opportunity to reflect on your life, loves, experiences and travels thus far ........ hopefully it will bring a smile to your face .

Its because i have been having a hard time getting through to my family and friends just how serious this is. For too long, people were saying 'its just the flu', and a lot of people still think that. They also don't understand how much more virulent coronavirus is. My dad in particular is very blase about it. He looks at the UK figures, compares then to Spain and Italy and thinks the UK is ok, not realising that the UK is 3 or 4 weeks behind Spain and Italy. He said they are working on a vaccine, unaware that it could take 18 months before it becomes available after undergoing clinical trials. Throwing the death percentages at him is making him change his behaviour. The other day he said he can't stay indoors for weeks, so he will keep going out. When I gave him the stats, that if he contracts the virus and brings it home and continues to socialise, for every 10 family members he continues to have contact with, 8 are likely to contract the virus and 2 are probably going to die, and not necessarily him, he was lost for words to justify his refusal to isolate himself. Now had I said its unlikely you will get it, if you do its highly likely you will survive, he would continue to go out every day.

Sorry for the passionate rant, but with 4 friends and 1 family member with Covid-19, i'm well aware of how bad this pandemic is. The death rate in Spain is around 33% at the moment.
