Meniere's disease?

Okay I'm sat at home with bad vertigo and sickness.... Found out I've a family history of Meniere's disease... Now this could have a huge impact on my living as a hgv driver...

So the question I have has anyone on here had or got the above disease, symptoms and rides a motorbike...

As far as I know its a automatic loss of licence hgv and maybe car and bike depends on severity... I'm on antisickkness drugs as bilugger all can be done for vertigo... Inner ear imbalance.. Motion sickness..

Basically I've got 2 days to see how it pans out then if no better it's ent specialist.. Ear, nose, throat to do tests to confirm or deny.. If its confirmed then they as doctors and me as hgv licence holder have to inform dvla otherwise I've a 1000pound fine...

The licence is suspended indefinitely till I can prove to a doctor I've got it under control and only then do I get my licence back...

The vertigo is untreatable the sickness is but the vertigo causes the sickness so I'm on drugs that are used for chemo treatment and lots of other nasty stuff.. I also have bad tinnitus in one ear... A known symptom..

Wait and see me thinks and I can't even drink alcohol..

Also as it'll be on my medical records should I lie or ignore advice and have a accident I'm banged to rights... Not that I'd do that..

If you have been diagnosed with Menieres then you should be prescribed meds to help control the effects,
Sudden attacks without warning mean it is up to you to notify the DVLA, who then request you to hand in your license.

Once your meniere is under control you should be able to apply for a medical review and apply for your license to be returned. But be warned once you have something like this on record it will be hard to get a driving job (full disclosure) and insurance companies may not wish to insure you, or your premium can be jacked up sky high.

This is the same policy as with stroke victims

Don't suffer with Menieres but I do suffer with severe bouts of vertigo.

Always suspected it was linked to blocked sinus, so always keep my sinus as clear as possible when ever I feel a blockage coming on.

But after the medicos did some inverstigation, they came back with vestibular migrain! Same symtoms you describe and those that I have suffered.

They offered me medication, all of which had differing side effects, none of which were compatible with me riding a bike, so I declined all of them.

Neihbour lent me a data sheet detailing some head & neck movement excercises than help keep the inner ear "lined up" and, touch wood, I've kept the worst of the effects at bay by routinely doing the excercises, only occasionally feeling the start of an episode. When I do feel the sysmtoms start, I do a few of the excercises very slowly and the episode never seems to worsen.

Hope you get sorted in a fashion that allows you to keep doing what you do.

I've suffered from migraines since 12 have been on beta lockers since 25 and triptains for 8 years for worse attacks... All work for me most of time, I haven't had a real bad vomit session for 4 years now, stress is a big contributor in my case mainly self inflicted due to worrying about nothing serious..

You may be onto something as I've recently like 5mnths had a partially blocked sinus.... With migraines it's all about self help and trying to find what works for the person..

I'll look up the ear exercise.... Owt to keep driving as me in a office or shop wouldn't be good for the murder rate lol..

I had similar symptoms about 4 years ago which was made worse by sudden onset anxiety regarding my HGV licence and riding my bike. Menieres was a suggested possible cause but antibiotics for a more common virus cured the symptoms and they have not returned.
I've never considered myself as an anxious person but it's easy to bring on or make worse a vertigo type attack if you are 'waiting' for it to happen. Controlled breathing and mindfulness works wonders.
