I cams across this very great idea and app today called what3words...

Google it and be amazed...

Got it last week.

Been using it for years.

It's a great way for meeting up when the terrain is crowded - such as at Festivals, Rally's and Gigs.

Also for meeting points on the green lane network, as some are not shown on all sat nav apps

Great idea I need this possibly more than anyone anywhere ... I get lost in my own back garden .........later serves patch

I can confirm that Nottinghamshire Police and Derbyshire Police & Derbyshire Fire services are using the system. Probably others too.

I can confirm Avon & Somerset police also use the app.

The usage of the app is growing fast - British Cycling are using it to direct race marshalls to their stations for managing traffic

I think it's a solution to a problem that doesn't really exist.

Quite possibly true Daryl, and most of the criticism is based upon it's use in emergency situations.
I've never used it in an emergency situation.
I find it novel and fun to use - for meeting up in places that are not street addresses, or in a park, or at outdoor events and festivals.
It costs me nothing to use, and if W3W make a buck selling it to corporations where is the harm in that?
It is commerce, just as is every free app out there. It will probably be useful in an emergency too. It certainly helped those that have been reported on the BBC who maybe didn't know about co-ordinates and how to use them.
As a side Google's location services leave a lot to be desired. Last week I was at West Hook Farm for holiday, and Google location services show that I had been to The Bishops Palace in St David's, and that I got there by swimming across At Brides bay.

Don't know what was going on there.

There is one big problem, particularly in the UK. It is reliant on a phone signal.
Even it the supposedly well served south east, getting any sort of signal out of town mast range is tricky.

Problem number two...it is reliant on a battery. By the time you have had a chance to get lost, sods law says the battery would be flat anyway.

That said, I’m inclined to download it anyway. Even a minor off when out for a ride down some backroads can leave you unaware of where you are.
