I'm confused
Surely the ncd applies to the policy you are taking out, the number of bikes on the policy is irrelevant because the discount is applied to the policy price.

Re: multi insurance
that is correct, it seems .. but I have now taken out 2 new policies
.. and the discount can only be applied to one
so I need to start a new ncd from 0 for the second bike

If it's a multi-bike policy then the NCD should apply across the board....otherwise, what's the point?
Try Carole Nash.
it seems the ncd applies to the POLICY (and to ME)
and not the bikes

Re: multi insurance
I have gone into this thoroughly and this appears to be a general rule with all insurance companies

Re: multi insurance
CN now do a 6 wheel policy----My van was just £240 fully comp and cheaper than last year--and all three bikes are added for £140 fully comp--all renewing on the same day--as it turned out my bikes and van are only separated by about 3 weeks on the renewal date. With CN you get all the european breakdown cover, homestart, and their legal services for uninsured losses. I have protected no claims--and all this is despite my Triumph getting written off very recently by some prat doing a U turn without looking--and me having to claim off my insurance as the third party's insurers were/are being prats also--AVIVA have been excellent (via CN).

Re: multi insurance
Sounds excellent
but I have done this now .. and will be keeping separate policies from now on.
You may find that although all vehicles are fully covered. you may only have ncd on ONE ????

Re: multi insurance
It sounds to me like the ncd applies to the group of vehicles insured but not to separate ones.. except the main vehicle ??

Re: multi insurance
Look at this the other way around.
You have one bike and 6 years NCD.
You then add two more bikes to the policy.
After a complete year without a claim you decide to put all of the bikes on separate policies.
How have you earned 7 years NCD three times? You haven’t. We can’t have it both ways.
Buying insurance is a minefield. I’m not a big fan of how things work but I always try to remember that the purpose of an insurance company, and business in fact, is to make money.
I am definitely not a fan of Carole Nash. Last time I called them the conversation started with the promise of free stuff. What gift I was going to get.
I struggle with bullshit like that. I did find LV very easy to deal with.
Three bikes on one policy. Adding or removing a bike was easy. The Car insurance with them was also made simple when my wife passed away.
The car and insurance was in her name. No problem. They changed the policy to me and the NCD came with it. I was a named driver so that helped.
All in all, excellent service and a company that I would recommend from my experiences with them.

Re: multi insurance
good to see your positive experiences
personally, I have paid in to insurances for half a century
and only one major claim, for a stolen motorbike.
its always been fully comp but never really needed it.
in recent years I had 6 bikes on one policy
but scrapped or sold them to have just the one bike
after a couple of years of finding out that that golden unicorn did not exist
I added a trail bike to my road bike
my single bike policy (with 10 years ncd) was made into a multi-bike policy
and i had this for over 2 years,
with the second bike actually named, and given a separate ins cert. for each year.
i thought it reasonsble to assume that that second bike had accrued 2 years of ncd
(even if the first bike were now agreed to be limited to 10 years ncd ??)

Re: multi insurance
Put like that it does sound reasonable. I’d forgotten about the separate certificate for each bike.
When I needed my trade policy after 7 years I had no entitlement to a NCD on a private policy.
The answer to my why not question was a very simple...it’s a different type of policy.
Hard to swallow after 7 years of paying £2500 per annum, not claiming for anything. No problems with my vehicles, my stock, the premises, Demo rides.
Anyway, nice LV did give me a 3 NCD based in history and history before I had trade policies.
The lessons....always keep old insurance certificates and never assume.
Add to those always be polite and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
Easy to say, I do get agitated and I still assume from time to time.
