Advice required - My daughter has a Citroen C1 , 3 cylinder 1 litre type thing with only 75k on it on a 57 plate, its started using a hell of a lot of oil and doesn't seem to be leaking out and little sign of blue smoke on start up or general running?? It used 2 litres of oil in about 4000 miles which is quite a bit. I'd normally have thought rings were going but lack of blue smoke says otherwise?? Also didn't think modern cars were like that really unless abused and being its a "girls" car generally (stands by for abuse lol) wouldn't have thought it was abused before she got it.
So anyone any bright ideas or suggestions?

Re: Any car mechanics in??
Greetings,
I am not experienced in this particular model but we need to bear in mind that these engines do need to be revved quite a bit since they only have three cylinders instead of the 'normal' four. Oil consumption is often higher than we might be used to when compared with compact cars of old.
I would suggest that if in all other respects the car engine is performing well then it might just be a characteristic rather than a worrying impending fault. However, I think that you would need to carry out compression 'loss' testing on each cylinder to check for any anomalies but my best bet is that it has a turbocharger and it is that which is getting worn rather than the engine itself.
Hope these comments may help in some small way.

Hugh.

Re: Any car mechanics in??
I had exactly the same with a vw engine, all of a sudden using loads of oil but not showing any smoke or leaks. Unfortunately the modern emission gubbins masks where the problem lies and deals with the smoke so whilst it probably is the turbo or it's seals it could also be rings or god knows what. It was trade in time for me as I was facing a possible 4k bill.
The secret of a long life is knowing when its time to go.

Definitely not the turbo, there isn't one fitted!
I'll check the air box on it at the weekend and see what I find, haven't really had a chance to have a good look over it yet as she doesn't live with me.

Re: Any car mechanics in??
As a note 1 litre per 1000 miles is an industry standard for maximum oil usage (AFAIK for bikes and cars). Not to say that it is acceptable for that kind of usage but at level it's clearly considered something is very wrong.
As @Hugh said they need to be revved quite a bit, maybe go out with her driving to see what her driving style is like and see if it's quite revvy.

I've been out with her and revvy is deffo not her style, shes in 4th by 30mph in a 1 lire car!!
For now I've got her to note the milage and to check the oil regularly then see when and how much it needs topped up by
