On Any Sunday!

Post by captinktm »

I don't know if anyone else as read the article in the resent Rust mag about the "greatest film about motorcycling ever made" but I did and enjoyed it. I have watched the film hundreds of times, I have the box set, and I have read many articles about the making of the film and Bruce Brown him self. But the Rust article still managed to be informative. My question is this. If someone made a similar film/documentary about motorcycling now would it be the smash hit OAS was?

Let's guess:

1) Churchgoing

2) Motorcycling

3) Shopping

Answer: 2) is correct!

Back in the late 1960s or early 1970s a bloke called Bruce Brown made an award-winning documentary about professional surfers called "The Endless Summer."

A mate of his who did a bit of motorcycling saw it and said "Hey Bruce, you could make a film about motorcycling."

"I don't think any major studio or distributor would be interested in that, so funding would be a problem," Bruce replied.

"I tell you what," his mate said. "I'll finance it and star in it as well if you like."

His mate was Steve McQueen...yup, that Steve McQueen!

The rest is history....

It actually featured what were incredible technical innovations for the day, with helmet cameras, and slow-mo filming through massive telephoto lenses. The fact it was all (obviously) shot on film stock gives it a real period, slightly 'druggy' quality now.

I've got the DVD somewhere...it's worth a watch.

Worth a watch? I can't believe some as not seen it and is interested in motorcycles. But saying that reading some of post on this forum its plain to see that my love of Motorcycles and riding and theirs are two completely different worlds. I think this film should be part of the CBT!! :D

It definitely is the best moto film ever. Very inspirational. My mate lent me the box set, it was years before I gave it back to him! He kinda bribed me by giving me 'On any Sunday 2' to watch instead!

Great stuff.

A great film but for something modern MotoNamad 1 and 2 are well worth a watch. More adventure travel films but the cinematography is first class.
