Where's Michael Fish when you need him

Post by Redmurty »

30 years ago I was doing sea trials in the Iceland Faroe's gap when the famous Michael Fish storm went through. I have never seen seas like it before and since

Were you hit by the storm ?

cheers Spud ;)

That same storm was remnants of hurricane emily, and at the time I was working in Bermuda and that gave the island a pretty good "blow job", the eye went right over the island. .....needless to say when Michael fish said there is no storm coming, we were saying. ...oh yeah baby there is.

I was in my truck doing my usual deliveries in the Cotswolds, I saw the A429 (fosseway) blocked by about 15 big trees. I saw the whole roof of a huge farmers barn take off like some UFO and dodged roof tiles flying off a pub while I was in the phone box , no mobiles back then.

I also led a convoy of trucks around the small back roads to try and get further south, they just followed me as I knew the area well. I got back to the depot in the dark and also found out that our driver near Minehead was in a pub for the night as his truck was trapped on the A39.

It was an interesting day to say the least

When we heard our greenhouse disintegrate at about 3.00am, I moved the car from under our flapping car port roof and watched half a tree fly up the road.
East Sussex was badly hit but in illogical strips.
Walked up to check my mother in law's house and there were open gable walls and missing roofs everywhere.

We had a friends feezer contents for three weeks while they waited to get their electricity connected back up.

Then we got it again, to a lesser extent, in 1990 (or 1991?) and lost a beautiful and heavy fruiting plum tree.
I went out in the middle of the night agan to try and drag it away from our replacement greenhouse.

I know how much the ship I was on twisted, amazing interesting yet a little scary to think how much stick metal can take, although we did find part of the super structure had split and quite a decent crack had formed,

cheers Spud ;)

I remember Hurricane Charlie all right, watching that weather forecast and being an avid sailing man with clear memories of the Fastnet Race disaster thinking oh shit this is really bad and then being gobsmacked by the dismissal of that weather system as nothing to worry about. We worried about our boats for that one, and they were all out of the water up on hard ground.

A good friend at that time had an estate in Kent and the poor man was reduced to tears after trees he and a few generations of his family before him played in were levelled. The photographs were really sad because it was all damage to nature for him, he didn't care about the buildings because they could be replaced.
