50 years ago this weekend the first breathalyser test using a ‘blow in the bag’ device was carried out on a motorist in Shropshire. Anyone remember these?
50 years ago today the Police would have still been asking motorists to touch their nose with eyes shut, walk in a straight line or stand on one leg.

He's blowing so hard he shit himself. Maybe the nozzles blocked.
How could you tell if the crystals turned green anyway, everything was black and white in them days. No wonder there were so many drunk drivers about.
If you could use a blow in the bag test to check if someone was using their mobile phone while driving, I'd vote for that.

Re: 50 Year Ago This Weekend...
I don't remember the report of the first actual test but do remember listening to Barbara Castle speaking in Parliament as she was the Transport Minister who introduced the Bill. She said that many people thought of her as 'a bit of a Hitler' for doing so, to howls of laughter from the Tory opposition benches - and probably her own! - and it was my first introduction to the workings of 'democracy'.
On that subject, I was just ten and I still haven't quite worked it out ...
Thanks for posting Alun - I guess you're an early bird on Ra¡id 4 like me!
