God, that made me laugh!
I think I do remember her now...if it was her, she told me the great Coalville 'joke' of the time...
"When Steve Galpin's motorbike shop burned down, he claimed for everything...except the five gallons of petrol and box of matches!"

Not sure; the area is a bit of a hot-bed of racing.
The Mackenzie family live in Ashby, George Beal (chemist, turned builder of replica 1960s classic Honda GP bikes) is just up the road, and there's loads more.
Galpin was once the importer of MotoGori...a less than good Italian MX bike that used `Moto Villa engines, then Rotax. http://cybermotorcycle.com/euro/brands/gori.htm

Interestingly....when the first police constables appeared they were unarmed, except for a stout stick.
And this was a time when any adult could legally buy a revolver and ammunition from any hardware shop, and carry it around with them.
There were few firearm-related murders...partly because the automatic penalty was a meeting with 'Captain Swing'.
Poisoning was another matter...there were lots of accidental poisonings, plus healthy people being struck down by diseases such as cholera, with symptoms very close to poisoning and no forensic medicine to speak of, so poison was the preferred murder weapon

I agree, and I believe the ordinary citizen should be allowed arms to the level of the police force, never gonna happen in the UK though, protection of the wealthy, defence of privelige is what our legal system is about, we don't want any revolutions here, we're British dont you know dont you knowgaryboy wrote: personally I think that we should be allowed to legally defend ourselves .. and no, I am not talking about `reasonable force` or niceties ..
what do others think?

Under Recruitment, my local police force says:
"Police Officer
We are currently closed for new registrations or applications."
I don't think they've taken any new police for some years
