Tested in 2003 and finally rolled out to all by 2008. So, let's have it right - Labour. And why would it not have been? Yet another misguided socialist nonsensical policy without a hint of practicality or real world application (and I say that as an apolitical person).

They used to until the Tories changed it a couple of years ago. Not sure why.
.

One of the reasons (the main one) is to try and replicate what it's like to have an earned income so that you (the benefit recipient) are responsible for paying your bills and managing your life. Seems like a good idea toe me. Universal credit if it ever comes will (mostly) be paid monthly for the same reasons. Oh, and it's loads loads cheaper for everyone.

Rental properties and a small company making (in your estimate) 25k After taxes is a pretty good income and is by no means earning nothing and getting by on bugger all !

Sounds good though and well done to you for making it work.
That's more that what we got before we 'downsized' twenty years ago!

I don't usually get involved in political debate on here, but..........I think you'll find it wasn't the Tories that changed the way housing benefit was paid and to whom.

Yes, a great idea in principle. However, in many cases, people with problems that receive a large amount of money in one go are likely to spend it on other things rather than the intended rent.
While trying to instil a feeling of responsibility and self worth for many, tenants and landlords, it simply doesn't work.
funny when you watch benefits street type programs, they always have money for fags, big tellys.
remember the program earlier in the year when to get 4 families off benefits they gave them £24k to start a business. one bought a van and he had no licence, one treated the family to holidays and expensive treats.

dont give them the cash pay the landlord direct, the energy companies etc

what a joke

Many Landlords are left thousands out of pocket due to non payment by the renter, then spend at least three months of expensive court and bailif action to remove the "tenants" who have more rights of access than the homeowner.
As to the origional post, I applaud all those who can make something of themselves and through hard work, long hours and much sacrifice make a decent income.

Which is why the quite understandable "No DSS" attitude prevails amongst many private Landlords.
