Anything goes, and mine's a Guinness.

I'm also with Hastings for my Tracer 900.... FC was £95 last year.
My renewal was due a few weeks ago. Hastings sent my renewal quote as £110... i told em i could do better elsewhere.
Straight away they dropped it to £91 FC... I accepted.

Ramasis were half the cost of what C Nash quoted me - methinks it's a bloody lottery

It's actually a casino...the 'house' (underwriters) are taking your bet that you will have an accident where the claim will exceed the premium, plus whatever they can gain from investing the cash.

Underwriters spread the risks by looking at exposure in different areas...life, motor, property, shipping, aviation, etc. They also look at investment opportunities: land, property, stock, shares, bonds, commodities, to maximise returns on investments. They also look to reinsure part of the risk with people like the Lloyds 'names'.

Their eagerness to accept particular risk is driven a huge number of variable factors and hence premium prices can vary too. There's an underlying 'insurance cycle': where there are a lot of players in a market, premiums and profits are low. Some players drop out of the market, premiums and profits rise, then players come back into the market, premiums drop and off we go again.

AFAIK insurance companies have a low price for the first year to entice you in/new customer 'promo' price then basically hope you forget or CBA to change and just go with a renewal the following year at a higher price.

I have zero loyalty to insurance companies and will go with the cheapest that meets my needs. I'd say get on a reputable comparison site and see what you can find (confused, comparethemarket, elephant, etc)
In my early years of riding these were always sketchy looking or named companies and actually had to claim once with no issues. Overall it's the same few companies that actually insure you (Ageas, LV).

I've recently been with MCE, Devitt and Hastings.
Whenever I've been asked about modifications the wording has generally been 'performance enhancing'.
Thats about it, RAC went to the just upped my quote 100 quid on a shitty old Africa twin for no good reason( I questioned the increase and they gave me a load of bollox including blaming Brexit), gave em the finger and found the same policy 25 quid cheaper than what I paid last year, they just rely on customer inertia, bloodsuckers the lot of em.
