Death of an airfield

Post by Mike101 »

I was bored today in my hotel so decided to go for a drive. I ended up at the Avro museum on Woodford airfield.

While the museum is very good and well worth a visit it was so sad the see the slow destruction and decay of such a once important airfield.

All Lancaster and Vulcans were made there and soon there will be nothing left.
even the old green Avro hangers have been left to rot.

I understand progress and all that but being a big flying fan I found it all very sad indeed.

I thought the Avro factory was at Chadderton, but I get your point of the aerodrome slowly returning to nature. No money in them of course until someone wants to build hoses there I guess.

There are several airfields around Wolverhampton that were left to rot and are now being used as industrial estates.

"Virgin" used one for a while for balloon/blimp work, Branson then wanted to expand the operations of the airfield and turn it into a commercial but locals got it stopped

cheers Spud ;)

Looking at some of the houses being built I don't think that scrounges will Ben getting many of them.

All that's really left are the hangers were the last Nimrods were cut up. You can see the history almost dripping out of every building.

I wonder if anybody has documented what was there...not much online.

I'm a ex serviceman, have a service disability pension and work my arse off to manage to pay rent. No affordable housing or local authority stuff on tap for me. Iirc affordable housing down south equates to something like 250k+

What a pity. They would all make bloody good asylum and immigration processing centres. Give the new residents a can of paint, brush and a training video with re runs of DIY SOS in 45 different subtitled languages and bobs your uncle. Who needs a lottery grant and affordable housing eh? (thumbs)

Filton,Bristol where Brabazon, Concorde and many other aircraft were built is disappearing under housing and retail park although the hangers are still being used and it seems that a museum will finally be built to house the last Concorde.
Saw the first UK Concorde take off from there and the last one land there.
