Re: EU. In or out?
ok .. so I have thought about it, and come up with a compromise deal.
the UK is still divided 50/50 ish to remain or stay.
so neither remain nor stay will satisfy.
noone will be fully satisfied with either deal.
so a half in half out is possibly a good idea?
not a million miles from the eu/may deal.
but no backstop
. leave the eu on haloween.
. this would be a hard brexit .. but a soft interaction.
. this hard brexit would meen that there is no ni backstop as that was invented by the eu to keep the uk in.
. the actioning of the relationship eu/uk would continue as present, like a transition period.
. the uk would be an independent sovereign state, but under the auspises of the eu.
. uk law would be supreme, but be advised by eu law, which it would broadly follow but with the power of veto etc.
. the uk would choose what legislation it wants or needs from the eu legislators.
. free movement of people would continue, but they would only receive the money and benefits from their own country.
. single market to continue .. but uk allowed to trade to the world, and retain fisheries, agriculture etc.
. customs union to remain.
. money movement to remain.
.
noone will be happy with it (except me) but it is a way out of the impasse.
before it could be implemented, this proposition would need to be ratified with a peoples vote.
furthermore, such referrendum would take place every 5 years to keep in tune with the people .. the questions being changed to suit the times and circumstances.
feel free to copy my proposition and send it to the heads of the eu and uk
where it will be rejected out of hand in the interest of personal power

Re: EU. In or out?
Maybe a second referendum would give a decisive result as long as before being allowed to vote people had to read and pass a short test to demonstrate they understood the Lisbon Treaty.

What don't you like about the Lisbon Treaty as I assume you have also read it fully?

Re: EU. In or out?
Its funny (in the sense of odd) all this talk of treaties.
It is the Maastricht Treaty which has caused the majority of the problems by going for much further integration than most peoples wanted at the time (but holding a gun to the head of the smaller countries in terms of funding) . Yet that treaty should have been dead in the water after it was voted down by Denmark. Of course it was fudged and another vote taken etc. and we all forget that our Government were too scared to give us a vote at that time (John Major etc.) so you reap what you sow....
From that you may assume that I am a Brexiteer, except i'm not, I would happily stay in the EU, but would prefer a lighter touch, pre Maastricht type of relationship. I'm not sure which of the options would achieve this, but it would be a simple starting point.
No great swing in overall voting trends since the referendum (this was a pseudo referendum in a way), so there should be nothing to be scared about in having a people's vote with a couple of options on it (Out with no deal, XX deal or Revoke article 50). the sooner we can do this the better as the Politicians have made a complete arse of it so far.
The complete obliteration of the Brexit Parties in winning constituencies in Scotland by Brexit parties (although they do get MEPS by PR) is just a strong a message as the Brexit parties success in England and Wales, but will, no doubt be ignored all the same (by both Westminster and the London BBC) will continue to infect the wounds and lead to another referendum.
And we used to think that Italian politics was farcical.....

Re: EU. In or out?
Sadly with the demise of Theresa May and the resulting Tory leadership contest I don't think there will be an 'XX deal' on the table.

Re: EU. In or out?
The Remainers seem to have gone quiet. Are they asking for a re-vote?
I thought there might have been some observations on the EU election results by now.
