Try local sheet metal worker's, someone that makes industrial staircases fire escapes etc. they might be glad to get rid of an off cut, although you might be lucky with the 3m length.

What area are you from?
My stockholder I use for my steel and rsj's etc do ally checker plate, he's in Brum.

Actually just seen you're in Stourbridge, there used to be a company over by brierley hill called pitchford steel stock, I've had steel checker plate off them before, if they are still going I'd give them a call.

Try L.O. Rogers in Coseley. Mike's the man to talk to. Tell him Ben from Astromezz sent you.

You have endless places to try living in the black country and if you did need to pay it would be quite cheap . I get all my steel from http://www.underwoods-steels.co.uk/products.htm in Worcester .
Suzuki DL650 (Wee) with many nice mods ..

Yamaha XT660Z Tenere also modded ..

I have used metal supermarkets before when you only want small bit's like your after, I usually ask them what size sheets they have in stock 8'x4' or 2M X1M and ask them to guillotine me a couple of strips http://www.metalsupermarkets.com/stores/west-bromwich/
The steel stockist we use by you never have any off cut's, but there are plenty of sheet metal workers around the lye who would help
If your not the lead dog the view never change's
