I was thinking about gigs in the 70's and remembered that there was a craze of shouting "Wally" while waiting for the bands to come on stage.

Anyone else remember it? That's it. Wallyyyyyy. Merry Christmas. I'll get me coat.

Sounds like it pre-dates my first gigs by a bit.

Have you ever been to a Blockheads gig? Fantastic pre-concert atmosphere, with loads of chanting and singing until Ian and the lads came on.

I must confess, I remember it well B.B.

Both at the IOW Festival and Weeley, and many other festivals.

Interestingly, it was also the name of our local prog rock heroes Wally, back in the early 70's.

It was also the name of a strange fast food delicacy in the London area based on a large pickled gherkin or cucumber

Never saw the Blockheads live Dave, but have seen some OGWT performances which are good.
Did you ever shout Wally Ian? I must admit that i did. I might try and start it off again but on crowded High Streets if i ever get the chance.

Blockheads!! Yes, I saw them a few times complete with Ian Dury, the last times I recall were at the Hammersmith Odeon and The Sobell Centre in north London. More recently I've made a point of seeing them, minus ID of course, the last time being at a seafood bar in Whitstable. Their musicianship is still incredible. I've recently finished reading Baxter Dury's book account of growing up.... a fascinating read.
And can honestly say I've never heard 'Wally' shouted at any gig 🤔

Yep, guilty as charged B.B. :)

I saw Ian Dury and the Blockheads several times and they always seemed a very tight band to me.

Saw them maybe 5 or 6 times in all. But most poignant was Ian Dury's last gig at The London Coliseum. A lot of us Blockhead followers kind of knew it would be the last one, so there was an absolutely full house.

Weirdly they were supported by Kirsty McCall (another great artist) who would also be dead within a year or so, and in the audience was Mo Mowlam (regular Blockhead fan) who was also on death's door. Ian sipped morphine now and again as he got through the set - and we all knew it was the end. Brilliant and so sad at the same time.

Just to move the thread on: have any of you seen this...?

Basically a well-trained classical musician analysing Pink Floyd, which he is listening to for the first time! Not every one likes picking favourite songs apart but I love his enthusiasm and his breakdown of the chord progressions etc. Good moment at 9.30 too! But watch it from the start...

Today I am mainly listening to... a bit of Fanny. The massively under-rated female Jimi Hendrix.

Great track:

I've played this few times over the last weeks. Dropkick Murphys, an "Irish" band from Boston. "I Wish You Were Here"

Their Christmas song ("The Season's Upon Us") is also quite nice.
Champagne taste on beer budget.
