That will be £220 plus VAT

Post by dave_ac »

(This will be a rant!)

Why, oh why is it the motor trade has to say the price is £xxx + VAT?

When i buy milk its never, 'That will be £1.20 sir, plus VAT'

When I go to Halfords, B&Q, PC World, ASDA, pay my gas bill or petrol it is never 'plus VAT'

I was at a big BMW dealer today getting work done on the car, and it was 'plus VAT' all the way. When I pointed out that I am a member of the public just like the rest of the customers here why do you shock me twice with the price? I then got grumpy and said if you use the phrase plus VAT once more I'll never.........

(Sorry this is Dave's girl friend. I've taken him away from the keyboard and locked him in a darkened room)

Because there is no VAT on milk or other foodstuffs...or on crash helmets.

I always made it clear to folk they were paying VAT extra...and if they complained I said it's not for me, it's for the Government.

As a retailer, the Govt doesn't give you a penny for all the trouble you go to collecting VAT for them, including repricing everything every time they change the rate, then coping with folk moaning because 'you' put the price up.

Richard, I've been let out of the dark room and given a frog pill.

There is VAT on food, either the standard rate, reduced rate or a nill rate. There are also exceptions. A hot drink is different to a cold drink.

I too sell to the public and the price is always inclusive of VAT, never + VAT. As a trader I use the ex VAT price but as a member of the its inclusive all the way.

As an aside motorcycle helmets are zero rated not exempt from VAT - i could be wrong on this

As a business we quote inclusive to retail customers and plus vat to the trade.

I was under the impression that retail prices had to include vat. :S

I think that's true for 'marked' prices on items on display.

There's a farm shop/hardware shop I go to where the consumer stuff at the front is priced inc vat and the stuff at the back for farmers and tradesmen is + vat

Couldn't agree more.

The sales guys knows that you have to pay VAT, we know that we have to pay VAT so lets cut the crap and just hear the price.

Oh and hate even more, "that's £220 plus THE VAT."

THE wise up!

BMW = company car to most dealers I suspect. Either that or they are so embarrassed with their charges they are trying to make them sound smaller. We are vat registered and all our estimates are plus vat at the prevailing rate which can be any one of four, we even have to 'charge' zero vat.
The secret of a long life is knowing when its time to go.
