Recession still seems to have it's teeth in the UK economy.
I'll resist the temptation to hop on my soap-box and berate our **** poor politicians...
..we'd be here all day
But the thought occurs to me, much more could be done to help get the bike industry
pick up..
Things that seem obvious to me, include:
1: ditching the RFL for bikes - seems silly really, anyway, as bikes cause to little wear to roads,
and they don't contribute to congestion, are "like for like" more environmentally friendly.
2: Address the Licencing issues:
- should motorists be further encouraged to think about Bikers' welfare?
- Can the test be streamlined and made more straightforward, without
sacrificing rider safety, and the knowledge they DO need?
3: Bus lanes? Make it easier for biker commuters...
Still, hats off to MAG and BMF for fighting the good fight!

More people actually JOINING MAG and TRF etc would help them Lobby more effectively, rather than just shrugging it off and benefitting from more committed riders efforts/money.

Re: WHAT WOULD HELP OUR AILING INDUSTRY
why should people get into biking when they cost more than cars?
why bother with a £9K bike when you could get a decent car that averages 50mpg and costs £35 a year road tax. we get screwed over, and plenty of people are put off by it. then theres the fiasco of getting a license, with the hoops bikers have to jump through when you can pass your car test and jump in a ferrari.
with so many bikes these days coming out at £10K+, I'M thinking why do i bother?

Brilliant answer, and one I wholly agree with!

lot of truth in that davsato, i wonder if i was a young lad starting out on bikes today would i bother with them at all, so much sh*t they have to go through now, back in day as you older lads know, age did not matter you went and got your first provisonal licence and you could ride as big as bike as you wanted, insurance was for noting in thoses days. i dont know what happened in the last few years, it all went and became a big money game and made it very unfair on the young people.

Perhaps it depends on how you look at it.davsato wrote:why should people get into biking when they cost more than cars?

Should we look at the comparison like-for like, and things do look slightly different.
What you want to compare with what might well be a subjective decision.
But picking a couple of vehicles off the top of my head:
R1/ZX10/Gixer thou/Blade versus comparable top end car? Bikes are much cheaper
and in some instances a damn sight quicker too.
What's a quick, well made car cost these day? 30k? 20k?
I know GS is a lot less than a Landie :S
But like doesn't have to be dull if budgets don't run to the £15k flagships....
My old ZZR11 (which I very stupidly sold) was worth peanuts, had done
50 odd thousand miles, and was as old as Noah's mother-in-law.............
....... but it'd still run rings around your average Chavmeister in his
Tinbox GT-turbo-injection-add-on-a-thon.............

Re: WHAT WOULD HELP OUR AILING INDUSTRY
That's my point. Im not interested in an R6 or a CBR but most new blood will be and they are priced out. I don't disagree with limiting them to start with, but they should be on cars too

Too right!davsato wrote:That's my point. Im not interested in an R6 or a CBR but most new blood will be and they are priced out. I don't disagree with limiting them to start with, but they should be on cars too
There should also be a CBT element to learning to drive a car too, but getting any politician to listen and act on such logical and sensible measures for car drivers seems to fall mostly on deaf ears. It's almost as though there's a (barely) hidden anti-bike agenda....

I always struggled to understand why biking isn't promoted more, when did you last see a TV commercial for anything bike related?
