As a small bike enthusiast I've been mulling over the idea of a small bike rally for a while and think I've come up with a format to make it fun for all the family.
So just like an ABR rally is centred round a weekend at a campsite, turn up Friday, ride Saturday, pack up and go home Sunday.
But how to encourage the small bike adventurers out of the woodwork? Hmm maybe a bit of healthy competition a la VINCE or Lost Dog or Paddy Dakar. So basically a treasure hunt instead of a lead ride out. Teams of two or more grab their maps on Friday and set to to plan their route on/off-road or both to get maximum points.
Ok but that still doesn't encourage small bikes. So here comes the Freeloadeur handicap system. Each team's point score is divided by the average of their cubic capacity. So a team of two C90s has its score divided by (90 + 90) ÷ 2 = 90. A ludicrously mixed team of one Derbi Terra Adventure and one BMW GS1200 has its score divided by (125 + 1200) ÷ 2 = 662½.
Obviously smaller is better, but then bigger might get further and get more points to balance the handicap. And of course if you turn up with your bikes in a van or on a trailer that's cheating so we'll add in the engine size of your van/tow vehicle just to balance things out.
Anyone fancy it? Or will it just be Trix and me in a field?
