125cc trail bike wanted please

Post by richeyroo »

As per the headline, we're after a trail bike for my son who has his A1 licence
Basically anything with a 21 inch front wheel
I really want him to learn predominantly offroad on green lanes and smaller back roads - when I started on an RD125 and X7 250 , I was a complete moron and want him to get used to riding in gripless mud and slime first to get a feel for riding , rather than leaping straight onto a 125 race replica type
Will travel nationwide for the right bike as we have a trailer
If it was a XT125, XR125 that would be ideal, but all bikes considered

Very sensible.

AJP125 is well worth a look if you want a predominantly 'dirt' 125 that isn't an enduro bike.

I think the XR15 has a 19" front wheel, not that it would put me off one.

I had an XR125 last year and it was brilliant, I never noticed the 19" front. I did a lot of the Great Western Trail on it and it performed really well. What I did notice was the lack of power and gaps between the gears. But they were great teachers of planning! It was also pretty good on the road and had a nice low seat.
And now, Harry, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.

Another +1 for the Honda XR125L. A great bike with the bombproof CG125 engine. Great fuel economy with about 280 miles to a tank.
It’ll handle most off road stuff as it’s light and easy to move around.
It’ll do roads pretty well too. I did two 1000 mile camping trips through France on mine and it never missed a beat.

Thanks all for the suggestions so far although to be fair we are struggling a bit
I cant get my head around the fct that £3k gets you a lovely condition 954 Fireblade in mint condition for me, or a crappy WR125R with rust on the frame, and zero history for my son
We missed out on a decent £2050 XR125L on Ebat recently that was in good condition and had done 6 or 7000 miles so we'll keep looking
Also tempted by an Aprilia RX125 for £3200 which looks lovely and I think might do very well as a trail bike to get trailered or vanned to more interesting and remote trails

Yeah isn't that SO true? Buy the Blade and tell him to get the bus....

No, I don't really mean that. The Aprilia would be great and better than all the older stuff. Or a Beta 125RR if you can find one at that price. Proper suspension that your son won't grow out of quickly.

There's a KTM125 at AMS, but like most enduro 125s the PTW ratio means its full licence only
