In the latest issue of ABR, the test on textile jackets, the tester says he would get rid of the insulating layer that comes with most of the jackets.

I was thinking about replacing my jacket, BUT, it's comfortable, waterproof and I like it, The insulating layer is useless though.

I have to layer up below 8 degrees. I would like a warm layer to reduce the layers.

But what to get? The Rab one mentioned looks good, or should I try a Lidl one?

Just not sure what to spend to get a warm mid layer?

Each to their own but i love my Snugpak softie jacket and trousers. I sleep in them inside my hammock and although it is a bit bulky to wear under a motorcycle jacket it works well with a waterproof lightweight shell jacket or Goretex ex military waterproof. I daresay there are better jackets out there but for the price i wouldn,t be without mine.

Just something to think about... down jackets have a great warmth to weight factor because they need to bulk out and retain the warm air between the ‘poofed’ up down filling. If your outer jacket is snug then a down jacket won’t be as effective as it won’t be able to ‘poof’ out and trap the warm air.

Not sure I fancy a poof jacket snuggling up to me?

:) I bought one today. As the advert said, lightweight. Compresses into quite a small ball.
Warmth remains to be seen --- but I bought it because it looks good value. Zips and stitching look sound.
