A 12v cigar socket extension lead so you can charge your phone and hang up an LED light in the tent is a worthwhile investment, but you need a socket on your bike which is not ignition switched, and no wanking while the light is on!

Ha Ha Brilliant!! I rememner in a camp site on the coast there was a couple really going for it, they left the light on in the tent, there were at least 50 of us all watching. lasted about 15mins, fair play

I gave up rallies when I was 19. Theft was a problem back then too.

But anytime I am off a bum bag that holds the necessary stuff stays with me and stays inside the sleeping bag at night. If bike is locked up beside tent its often a safe place inside a pannier because to go at it will make serious noise.

I will throw another option into the mix,i love hammock camping. It was a revelation to me and some of the best nights sleep ever and that includes my own bed at home! For wild camping i carry a 3 x3mtr tarp and all the lines, pegs, bungees etc. A DD hammock,a Carinthia sleeping bag, cheap thermal self inflating mat(many people dont realise you get cold from underneath on a hammock as you are compressing the insulation on your sleeping bag). I also carry a cheap Helinox copy chair,a groundsheet,Coleman petrol stove and cookware, platypus water bladder etc.I never stay at proper camp site and have never been challenged yet.

Thanks everyone for all your replies, I'm going through each one and doing some research as I go. Bit distracted today as I just got the Transalp this morning! And stuck in work til 10pm!

In reply to the last few posts, I already have a hammock and intend on taking it as it packs down tiny. Cant remember the brand but its already been well used, normally hanging from truss in theatres and arenas not from trees outside mind!

I'll get some gear together and have a practice run in May, then we'll see how I get on from there!

Cheers all

Camping is my bed of sleep now i tried it last year at the HUBB three nights in sun rain and enjoyed every minute of it back then a tent was between £75 to £450 and to be honest every item had the same cost range down to a spork £1.50 for a plastic one to £25 for a titianium one :woohoo trust me my fried breakfast taste just as good using my plastic one. So don't go out and buy the best or the most exspensive gear money can buy as if you hate it you will get next to nothing when you try to sell it.

Here is my tip The Duke of Edinburgh not him but his award is a source of cheap good quality gear i picked up
everything you need for £150 Tent bag mat cooking gear petrol stove waterproof bag cup plate and a spork
i was super lucky as the said youth never went so all was brand new .

Since then i have been to France for a 10 day holiday camped 8 nights plus one night in a hotel using municapl camp site plus a few wild camping spots and one per arranged stop using campinmygarden.com the gear has paid for itself .
So beg borrow and steel gear have a go and if its for you then go and buy your kit if its not for you the credit card
can be another option.

Benson,

Solid advice. The £150 is a good budget too. And I also am a lover of French municipal camp sites. The pitches are big and last time we had a pitch that would take 4 tents. we put up 3 and a tarp and got 2 weeks camping for my share all of €47. We didn't have a swimming pool for that. We had a pitch on the edge of a river that you could swim in...or keep your beer cool in. Ferry from Ireland plus the camping ran to €200!

Booked a ferry today for a 3 week trip in September.
