Hi there,
On returning to biking I am looking for a new helmet as mine are all well out of date now.

In the cycling world MIPS is all the talk in helmets. What’s the craic in motorcycle worlds?

I was looking at the Bell adventure lids and there is a £100 almost price difference between MIPS equipped and non.

Any recommendations or thoughts?

Not looking to invest in a ‘forever’ helmet as yet (maybe a Schuberth E1 for that) so budget is important.

I've got a MIPS Bell Adventure helmet.

So far as I can see, MIPS is a thin sheet of plastic that fits between the hard polystyrene foam helmet structure and the liner.

Although an excellent fit, the helmet gets quite uncomfortable after a couple of hours of wearing...I'm thinking of taking the MIPS bit out to see if it makes it any more comfortable.

The non-MIPS helmets may just be cheaper because they are very old.

No insult intended but it could just be the shape of your head.
I find Shark helmets really uncomfortable, but my MIPS Bell MX9 Adventure helmet is one of the most comfortable I've ever had.

It may well be...the MIPS creates a pressure line on my forehead.

I find bell helmets are just the wrong shape for my head.
I found HJC fit lovely and am on my third.
Not gone down the "adventure" helmet route yet. Am considering getting an MX helmet and goggles for trail riding and keeping my existing HJC for longer distances/cold weather.
I suspect MIPs in a motorcycle helmet is a bit of a gimmick as unlike in cycle helmets, your head is held much more firmly in place rendering the MIPs idea a little redundant. But maybe I'm wrong?

Try using your thumbs to compress the polystyrene lining underneath the MIPs where it causes the pressure line perhaps?
Not sure how effective the MIPs is but no harm in keeping it if you can eh?

I think I would agree. My understanding is the MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) is there to allow a bit of movement between your helmet and head to prevent the helmet "grabbing" and twisting your head in a different direction to the rest of your body.

Like you say a motorcycle helmet encloses your head and holds it quite firmly, even with open face helmets. A cycle helmet sits more on top of your head.
