Leather gloves in need of TLC

Post by Brenhden »

Morning all,

About a month ago I parked my bike up in the boiling heat and put a cover over it. This morning I got her out and found I'd left my helmet with the gloves inside under the cover. Stupid I know but life has been really hectic lately.

So the helmet which has a bit of mildew in it will be taken apart and washed no worries. But the gloves are part leather Klim Dakar and I really want to save them from the damp and mildew that's got on them. They have also gone a bit stiff.

Can anyone recommend what I can do to get them back to fighting fit please?
And now, Harry, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.

I found that this stuff I had in the garage for my car seats works well at cleaning and conditioning both my leather boots and gloves

You can probably get it cheaper than Halfrauds though

I've been using this stuff for 20 years. You won't find better for leather. I know I haven't and I have tried.

Also worth a try is Tea Tree oil (Boots chemist iirc) -worked on my leathers to remove mold (when left in garage cupboard for too long)

Local stables / country supplies will have oils for treating leather tack, find it's brilliant on gloves and similar.

Use vinegar for the mildew.
Then a good old fashioned dubbin.
If you can't get any dubbin just nick a bit of the missus hand cream rub it in gently little and often.
Nikwax do do a leather waterproof cream that I use on my leather gloves
It doesn't actually make the gloves waterproof bit more water resistant.
Had no issues with wet hands as hands are protected from the worst weather by the handguards.

I have done the same thing a few times, I normally leave them in my Kriega or in the back of the van
All I do is put the gloves on before I go out on the bike and wash my hands with them on with baby shampoo or fairy
and by the the time you get back there as good as new and dried to fit
I have put my GS Rallye gloves in the washing machine without realising until I emptied it and there still ok
Most of this KLIM gear takes a bit stick
If your not the lead dog the view never change's

Hi all, quick update,

I dry brushed, then wiped down with vinegar, then I used the Renapur. They feel like new.

Thanks very much all for the help :)
