After a bit of help...my trips this year involve riding through Europe and are quite early on so looking for kit that can handle wet, dry, hot and cold and don't want to spend more than about £800 .
Have been looking at the alpinestars tech road goretex suit which hAs come down in price and looks ok but I also really like the dainese kit especially the explorer. Both are about the same price with the difference being the dainese has a goretex liner while the alpinestars kit has a goretex outer layer.
Does anybody have any knowledge/experience with regards to these two brands.
Any advice much appreciated before I shell out a lot of money.

Re: Which jacket and trousers
My tip would be to try stuff on. I bought a new jacket that cost half the price of the one I went into the shop to buy. It fitted me best, so I know I will be comfortable. Waterproof, removable lining and all the air-con zips etc.
Mind you, a fraction of your spend.

That's a subject and a half! Your budget should Defo be able to cover it. I personally prefer layers rather than fixed membranes. I often find that zip in thermal liners leave a strip down the front and lack in thermal bulk.
I prefer a lighter jacket with good venting that I can get a primaloft jacket underneath and carry a waterproof outer.
That said both the suits you mention will do the job I'm sure. So for me it'd be down to fit. I know Dainese and I know what sizes fit me. Alpinestars not so, but for waterproofing the true goretex XCR outer is king.

I'd go along with this. If you're happy to spend £800 on a suit I'm sure someone will be along soon to tell you which one to get but you could kit yourself out for less than half the price.
I think a well vented jacket is the most important thing. If it's a bit cold put on the fleece or down jacket you're carrying for the evenings anyway. If it rains put a cheap waterproof jacket on top.Being waterproof is more important than being breathable because jackets don't breathe in pissing rain when it's still warm outside anyway.

Re: Which jacket and trousers
I have tried both on...the dainese fits well, feels like real quality and is reassuringly bulky with good armour but like all my previous kit the liners can be a pain in the arse.Alan29 wrote:My tip would be to try stuff on. The alpinestar has a goretex outer membrane, feels very light, has had a recent very large price drop but doesn't seem to be as well armoured. The back protector is an extra which grated on me a little.
Both fit well but I like the idea of a goretex outer on the alpinestars...then again the dainese oozes quality and has better venting......decisions decisions
