Anyone washed / Nikwaxed a GS Pro Rallye Suit (disaster free)

Post by Philiptigerrice » Mon Jan 05, 2015 9:50 am

My twat jacket is due a freshen up after several thousand miles of grime & winter.

My plan, is to empty it of its giblets / armour / pockets / liners etc... Then pop it on a quick wash (30 minute cool) to get the maximum grime off.

Then repeat that, with a Nikwax sachet or two thrown in. (With my City Pants in too).

Anyone had any dramas or disasters I should avoid?

I regulary toss mine in the washer, sans Goretex liner

I leave the armour in and was at 40c, with normal Fairy liquid

No need for fancy Nikwax as the fecking suit leaks like a sieve anyway

I usually use Nikwax tech wash first then after the usual Nicwax re-proofer after. No probs at all. Never use washing powder as breaks down the technical material and blocks the ickle holes that allow it to breath and stay water proof.
I have used it on HG and Arlen Ness stuff loads of times both of these are Gortex BTW

I may be wrong here but the outer jacket is not waterproof so can be washed in anything.

It's the inner liner that needs to come out and be washed in Nikwax stuff.

The waterproof part is not bonded to the outer jacket as i understand it.

But agian i may be wrong as i've not owned one.

Using waterproof on the outer will work to some degree (the Lotus Effect) as the rain will 'slide off' apart from at 'pressure points'. With a multi-layered garment I would separate, wash and treat each. But that's me........

All true, the outer jacket can be washed anyway you want

It's just a plain cordura jacket

So Techwash is just wasting yer money

Techwash for the Goretex separate liner, naturally

Once washed a walking/running jacket in the Tech wash stuff (in washing machine) - won't be doing so again, as it waterproofs both sides of the jacket, which now doesn't breathe like it used to (even though stated on bottle).

Might not matter so much with a biking jacket, but I'll just be using the spray on stuff from now on

True, but washed in the stuff does add extra waterproofing (I've done it with fleece gloves / Ronhills etc does work). Just don't like the stuff when used on Goretex type fabrics.
