Peli Case - mini top box - size?????

Post by redbikejohn »

I want to be able to deal with puntures on the Tenere myself so i want to carry the following:

Front & rear tube
Three mini tyre lever
Mini compressor
A few extra tools that are missing from the yamaha tool kit ie means to take off the front and rear wheels.

anyway a 'tooltube' just ins't big enough and a full size topbox is overkill so i'm thinking of buying a Peli Case to bolt to the rear rack of the Tenere. Does anyone have an idea what size would do the job? I'm thinking of somthing between the Peli 1120 up to the peli 1250.

Hi RBJ,

I fitted (bolted to the luggage plate) a Peli to my KTM recently, I went for the Storm im2100. Big enough for spare tube, BeadBrakR, compressor, first aid kit and my digital SLR at a squeeze ... but still compact and tidy. Most importantly it does not make my bike look like I deliver pizzas!! ;)

Just make your own tool tube at the size you need.
A 4" tube from B&Q 12" long.
3x12" tyre irons..will fit inside the tube
2xtyre tubes will also fit in the tube
A small inflator should fit
Along with a multitude of tools

How about a small waterproof roll bag and strap it on the rear rack

... Small drybag makes good sense if it's just for tools. Would do the job perfectly for a fraction of the cost.

I went with the box because I wanted to carry my camera in something robust and waterproof and still have quick access to it.

worth a look and can be removed and taken into hotel/tent unlike a bolted on peli , also cheaper

as for tools take a look at the motion pro trail tool I can do almost everything I need with it and it fits in my pocket

just a couple of ideas but each to their own

I have a Peli 1450 case bolted to the rear of my 800GS. OK it can't be removed, but it can be locked.
I have 12v wired in to it (car type cig lighter socket) so that I can charge my 'phone, camera batteries and even my laptop in there. Works a treat, certainly works for me ;)

I even carry a Samsung NetBook in it on trips and tours so that I can do Garmin routes as I go along, upload photographs from tour customers (they get a DVD of everyone's piccies at the end of a trip) ... I can even keep up to date with emails B)

If you want something almost but not quite entirely unlike a Peli case for less than half the price try this place http://evaq8.co.uk/Equipment-Cases.html

OK you have to put up with (not quite) KTM Orange but they do look reasonable.

As an alternative, I carry exactly what you're describing (and a bit more) in a Kriega US20. It's very stable when in place, easily removable and stuff don't rattle about like they would in a hard box as it's compressable.

it really needs to be a lockable 'case' as i use the bike all the time so it needs to be secure. i do have tail packs etc that i can use but i'd not feel confident leaving something like that on the bike when parked up in town or at work/supermarket.

The peli cases aren't as expensive as you all think, around £30 on ebay for the 1150 size without foam.
