lots of fiddling with the settings Gary, also learn a little about what Garmin calls a track basicaly its a point to point guideline on the screen very usefull for the trails. Unlike Tramp I like basecamp a tricky tool but at least give it a try, on my units rerouting can be set as auto, prompted or for me OFF. welcome to the world of GPS some swearing is likely, but for most us its worth a little bit of time .

Basecamp can take some getting used to, but once you have the hang of it, it is fairly easy.

When I use the Satnav in the car I also have the unit set to fastest route. This takes you on all the motorway, and A roads.
For the bike I use shortest route this uses all the B roads and back lanes.

With my Montana I can set up profile ie bike, car and off road all use different maps, routing and display different information relevant to the profile needs.

Persevere with it Gary

Ffs ..... You guys talk tracks and zumo and Montana yaba yaba when he has a very basic road only sat nav.... The guy has probs understanding the basics..

Just take a map with a highlited route and goto the nearest town... Route avoid motorways and tolls set will guarantee good A class roads in UK and Europe..

Ps getting lost is just another adventure..

If you look back at Gary's post history you will see that he is a keen trailrider wether it be with an engine or electric motor, so I suggest "tracks" will be important to him especially as he confirmed in the OP that his unit can run them, it may be a new tool to him but knowing Gary he will soon get to grip with the basics and soon after all the other relevant features too. I'd guess he would also want to have a bit more of an involved plan than just "avoid motorways and tolls" thats pretty clear from his other French advice request thread I'd say.

Thank you for your input, Paul, and (apart from the one troll, by-the-way ;) ) thanks to all the positive responses.

Following Tim's link, i have got hold of some waterproof sat nav holders for the bike, (moto and cyle) which seem extremely good value, tho not tried yet. Hopefully Tim will be getting hold of a pdf for me :) .. cool 8-)

Still not got a new tyre for my road bike, and only been by car to Tesco's  to test the sat nav .. discovering new things i didnt realise it could do .. like `find Tesco's` .. and seems to be more responsive with use? .. but perhaps it is just me, realising that it is, as reviewed, a high end model from Garmin .. and not a cheap bit of junk  ..

I have even come to terms with the route adjustments, if you take a wrong turn en route, and can now see the benefit of this app to a tarmac car user, as you then don't need to do a turn-around.

I didn't realise that this unit could do base camp, which i have read so much about, and still not sure? but look forward to testing it at some time .. probably when i get another small, very small, trail bike .. or even on the Emtb if i can find out about an independent power source, or wiring it up to the ebike battery?

Thanks to all the positive responses, but if anyone has a problem with my admitted naivety .. please pass by

ps .. I still find the wonder of TV fascinating   .. so something like this inovation .. a sat nav .. is a game-changing miracle to an old dog like me  ..

.. and you can SPEAK instructions to her .. (it)
I don't know if its imagination, but she seems to get increasingly annoyed if I don't follow her instructions to the letter … they have really inbuilt a truly feminine quality into the software

VERY MUCH APPRECIATED !!
Thank you Tim for the pdf file .. it looks very complex, but has detailed step to step instructions, so looking forward to becoming a compete master ….. er .. perhaps ..

How quickly one becomes so reliant on the satnav !!

Yesterday I had a load of piles .. the builders were putting in loud foundations very close to me
.. so to escape the head-aching noise, I rushed out but forgot my noo satnav ....
Driving, I soon felt naked, as I could not easily identify the speed limits, which I always find difficult to follow, as they are so variable on areas with new roadworks or varied signage etc, and I felt my usual loss of confidence return

When I use the satnav I have a serene feeling overcome me and relax into a safe and slow .. and completely legal .. driving mode.
Not ever felt that before .. always been a rush and tear.
I also missed my lady friend's voice for company

btw .. i had lost my 2 sets of CD's, when i scrapped both my BMW 525 and my Mitzi Spacegear 2.8 .... gott, i miss thems :? :?
.. and so, after a few years of pining for them, i suddenly realised i could `move forward` and actually buy some new CDs ........ (I know this sounds pathetic, but people who have been there know what I mean)
After faffing about looking for CD shops  .. i came across HMV online .. crikey .. it was so easy to simply select CDs and press `buy` with free delivery over £20  8-)
I really must try to get to grips with some (not all) of this modern stuff  8-)
