Top box on Tiger pillions love it, useful to carry things in. Tent, kip mat, sleeping bag in waterproof bag tied on back seat against box, which then gives me a back rest also. Your choice I use mine. cheers Spud ;)

top box went on my XT660Z at purchase and has only been off it three times; once when I had to take apart the back end to fit the pannier racks, and twice to put it under the bashplate when taking the front wheel off (they make great jacks if you've nothing else handy). The tenere is a bit short on storage as standard, and most of the time the top box is empty save for my tools, a tube and a pump – useful to have somewhere to put your lid and gloves if you stop for a look around somewhere though.
In June this year I undertook the whole Nature Rally in one trip, in aid of Riders for Health

Quick-release top boxes... yep, remember my first-hand experience of them as I was following a Transalp through Thetford Forest! :woohoo:

A few short years ago, I would never have sullied my pretty motorcycles with a pizza box but I'm over it.

Triumph made a good top box which I have on my Tiger 955i. We managed to get this in for a campng trip a couple of years ago;

2 x lightweight sleeping bags
2 x sleeping bag liners
Double air bed
Electric pump
Small fuel bottle
Triangia Cookset
2 x Plates
2 x Cutlery sets
2 x mugs
plus a packet of tea!

It was a tight squeeze B)

I've always had a top box on whatever bike i've had. Its handy around town and on the commute to work! Plus the girl friend prefers to have it on the bike when she is on the back! :)

I FORGOT THE TENT! we had a three man tent in there as well :woohoo:

I could probably fit her in the dry-bag as she's only 5ft 2ins.

i agree that those enormous boxes are ugly,
also when packed full will affect the handling of the bike.
BUT, i got roger (ard cases) to make me a small perfectly formed
ally box for me,and have to say ive no idea how i could cope without it now.
its just so handy.
im not tight or un sociable but im not all that keen on biker meeting places
or paying a fortune for a brew, so i put the brew tackle in mine so i can
brew up where and when i find that perfect spot.

its all been said. yes, ugly. but too handy to do without. mine stays on virtually permanently too. i even try to keep it empty when touring for use as a 'boot', friends take the piss then look daggers when it swallows my kit and they have to walk around in the sun wearing or carrying theirs.
helmet jacket gloves and a couple of doodads fit in it when im stopped, but it doesnt ruin the filtering ability.
its a backrest for my nipper and its somewhere to put my stickers!
re; the weight issue, yes, if im carrying an anvil, it could be a problem, otherwise ive never noticed a difference.
it does make a difference to the fuel economy though, not the way you would think, its better with it on, it fills out the big low pressure hole behind the rider. thats a rounded plastic honda box, dont know if that would hold true for a square metal thing.
