OGIO MX 450 tool belt
I'm interested to hear if anyone else has the Ogio mx 450 tool belt. I've had mine over 5 years now and it's holding up really well. I've used it in Europe, Africa and Asia.
But I'd like to see what and how other riders pack (in) it.
Any good tips?

Or, don't ride a bike if there are metal parts that can hurt you?Richard Simpson Mark II wrote: โTue May 28, 2019 10:23 am Here's a tip.
Don't pack hard metal objects around your spinal area.

Come on, it's not H&S overkill to make the helpful suggestion that wearing a belt full of hard, sharp metal tools is unwise. There's always somewhere else on the bike that you could stash them, and save all your soft stuff for pockets and belts. I fell off onto a rock last year, which managed to find the only gap in my off-road body armour. Bloody great bruise and accompanying pain. If I had been wearing a socket set it would certainly have been much worse.Spanners On Tour wrote: โTue May 28, 2019 11:36 amOr, don't ride a bike if there are metal parts that can hurt you?Richard Simpson Mark II wrote: โTue May 28, 2019 10:23 am Here's a tip.

I think we all want to survive our rides, even if lots of things can kill you, however, If I thought a tool would go through a belt designed to carry them, penetrate my abdomen and sever my spine I would't wear a tool belt. But I have used it for over 5 years and on many longer 2-4 week trips in remote areas where I need to be able to travel light'ish and still be able to get myself back to civilisation with whatever tools and spares I have.
If you ride through Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique on a DT175 you need to be light. I took the toolbelt, a small bagpack as well as a small northface water repellent duffle for my clothes.
I was just wondering if anyone else are using them. If not fair enough enlighten me to whatever system you use. If you do used the MX 450 or something similar, how do you pack?

Re: OGIO MX 450 tool belt
Im going to agree with the H+S assessors here :p
Had a plain old m8 hex bolt go right through the side of my boot once on a light fall, that was a non pointy thing through a leather boot. If it had been any longer it would have gone into my shin. I imagine a screwdriver going through a fabric bag would make a nice mess of the squishy bits the other side.
The bag itself looks alright, I'd just strap it round the bike somewhere rather than round me!
PS...that's a great picture of the bike in the canoe! I don't doubt you could ride round the world many time over without getting a screwdriver in the liver, but why risk it, when you could strap them to the frame/seat/subframe etc.

Re: OGIO MX 450 tool belt
Looking at my dirt bikes, there are few hard metal edges. Most of the extremities are flexible plastic, and pads are available for areas that aren't such as handlebars.Spanners On Tour wrote: โTue May 28, 2019 11:36 amOr, don't ride a bike if there are metal parts that can hurt you?Richard Simpson Mark II wrote: โTue May 28, 2019 10:23 am Here's a tip.

I do occasionally use a tool belt, but it's never on my back.
The prospects of a tool bursting out of a quality bag like the one shown are small. The danger comes if you fall on your back, and a tool roll serves to concentrate the impact on a couple of vertebra.

Probably the same as most. Front mudguard, as close to the headlight unit as possible (to stop the mudguard flexing and cracking), and rear mudguard, as close to the rear of the seat unit as poss.Spanners On Tour wrote: โTue May 28, 2019 12:25 pm If you do used the MX 450 or something similar, how do you pack?
I've never tried these throw over filler-cap mounted tank bags, but they look quite useful. Very clever types make a neat metal tool box ahead and below their exhaust headers - keeps the weight low. Takes a beating there though so has to be v tough.
As said above, that's a great pic of your bike in a pirogue.

Re: OGIO MX 450 tool belt
It's funny, I'm a diver by profession and have spent half my life at sea, but being in a small boat, with my bike, sailing on the Indian Ocean off the coast of Mozambique, with a big thunderstorm behind us made me slightly nervous. Nothing a cold beer at the other end couldn't fix. It was the most natural thing for the locals though.daveuprite wrote: โTue May 28, 2019 2:03 pmProbably the same as most.
