Flip-up helmet advice...

Looking for advice please on a flip-up helmet please, I've never owned one, are they any good..? I like the idea etc... My biker mate rides with a Caberg flip-up and he likes it. I don't need/use blue tooth technology built-in etc...

Don't want to spend over £150 if anyone can recommend me a make/model...?....thanks.

I had the Shark Evo 3, over your budget when new, and I found it well built with clever flip mechanism but very uncomfortable , heavy and noisy so sold it after 200 miles use for £100. I would steer clear of flip ups due to the weight and noise alone, I ended up with a Nolan N87 which has a large aperture compared to most helmets, gets great reviews and is relatively cheap for the specification.

I bought one of these recently & love it. Alot of helmet for the money. Use it mainly for solo day rides. You will need to get one a size up as they are a very snug fit. But definitly worth considering.

Seems to get plenty of good reviews as well

I bought the Caberg one a few years back and thought it was heavy and noisy

then I bought a HJC one and realised how good the Caberg one was

I recently bought a Tuzo one for £39 and although the fit is not quite right, it is light and just as good.


I now only wear flip ups, even if that means using a road helmet for all the fast and dangerous off-roading I do

I've had a Shoei Multitec for a long time. Matt black of course! It's comfy and reasonably quiet, and I'd certainly get another. The flip bit can be kept open up to around 40mph, above that it's best shut. However, I prefer my Bell Riot open lid with hinged visor, at least for 3 season riding, although it took a long time to wear it in to get max. comfiness.

I love the flip up and now would not use anything else.

Nolan GRex 9.1 is my current one but as it's now coming to 4 years I am looking at replacement and its proving tricky so will probably get another one.

Plus points are integral tinted sun visor, easy to remove visor to clean it, easy to fit Bluetooth and speakers and removable internal linings so you can wash them. No noise issues for me and good ventilation. I ride all year and its done at least 80,000 miles in all weathers and more than happy to have another.

I have a few lids the Shoei Flipfront is my go to lid. the flipfront has some inherent design disadvantages but many practical user advantages. They have more working parts so perhaps not best to go too low budget.

These things are always person/bike dependant but like others I've had flip up Cabergs and I've found them to be noisy, and they start to creak after a while. Good idea though as having a quick drink of water etc means you can leave it on, also more friendly when you pay for fuel at the stations that allow you to leave your helmet on.

I bought one when I started tutoring and they have their uses, they are a but heavier but nothing to excessive. The AGV compact is bang on your budget and is homologated for use open or closed, flip down sun visor and comes with a pinlock. Well worth a look.

I've been using flip tops for years now and much prefer them to fully enclosed lids. Of course each to there own. I bought a new Vemar Sharki last week and it's spot on. I paid £149.00 for it so would fit your budget. The write ups are very good for it too.
