I hae also been using Givi monokey kit for over 20 years. In 1997 I was using two E36 panniers when I was rear-ended by a car as I stopped at a roundabout. The panniers seem to have taken the force of the impact. The Wing racks both broke, and both panniers broke free of the racks, but the cases themselves remained intact. I only had to replace the lock mechanisms in order to continue using them - the metal parts broke, but the plastic bits were fine.

I would hold out until you can find some cheap alloy boxes.i use mine as a seat, a table,chuck a bag of ice in and great for keeping the beers cold when camping.and many other uses.

I had a pair of Givi Trekkers (Plastic) on the Transalp and couldn't fault them. Came with spares too. Pannier frames were robust and didn't corrode for the four years I had them. Side opening can be a bit tricky, so i got some bags for them (off a chap on here actually, which were a great buy).

They were a bit on the large side at 46l but you get smaller ones at (I think) 33l.

Strong enough to sit on etc. etc.

I am with Wideparting on this one if you bash them up you can repair them as well
You can also add to them if you take the missus away with you

I've a givi e45 box that originally came in white and is mint,but I've it for sale for cheap and had little interest.
Like those red/now pinkish givi boxes/panniers of the same model,the textured outer would take a liberal coating of dark grey bumper paint well and resemble the more traditional dark box option.

Just a little update.... I have actually got the funds to invest in the aforementioned luggage now but am still flip flopping about what to get. I can just about afford to get new now but buying 2nd hand would free up funds for more fettling. (If you have, or know of, any boxes for sale please let me know)
Am still looking at Givi but aiming to get metal boxes rather than plastic... BUT am also considering a set of SW Motech boxes. They are similarly priced but the SW Motech pannier rails are removable which I THINK is a good thing (?). On the other hand Givi do a top box big enough for 2 helmets which I THINK is a good thing (not too big??) whereas The SW Motech box can only hold one lid.
Anyone on here used SW Motech boxes? Are they any good? Do you actually remove the rails that often?
Or maybe you could suggest another option and confuse me still further?
