Thinking of buying a simple bike-mounted charging socket. Something that even an electrical fool like me can connect straight to the battery and run up to the handlebar. Any recommendations? Must be cheap and cheerful.
Would this one be any good?

Cheers for any advice...

Re: Charging socket
Looks fool proof to me lol...just check fuse size and remember if you plug 2 things in at once the output might not power everything and when riding stuff bounce out....
If its to recharge a phone a cheap battery pack jump starter is better with usb output and can be recharged anywhere https://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ultra-thin-Aut ... noapp=true
Something like the above can also jump start a flat bike battery

Re: Charging socket
Simply NO.
I have that very socket myself
1. USB will have a constant albeit low draw.
2. There is a small LED internally on that unit again this will have a constant albeit low draw
You will soon end up with a flat battery if you install that directly to your battery.
It will at least need to go through a switched live hopefully with a fuse. If you are unsure there are wiring diagrams on line that are simple to follow that will allow you to take it off of the battery with a relay and inline fuse.
Google is your friend.

Re: Charging socket
Thanks Russ, and thanks a lot Zimtim. Steer clear of that one then! I just want to run my old car garmin GPS in a clear pouch strapped to the handlebars to get to the bottom of trails, so it just needs to get enough power from the battery for that. I don't really want it to take a constant load from the battery all the time, or at least if it does I need to be able to turn it off when i don't need it - can't they make one with a good old fashioned on/off toggle switch? (preferably bakelite - I understand that).

Re: Charging socket
Ah haa ....ive a cheap ciggy lighter socket permenantly wired to battery via a use, dosent draw out when not used.
Charges a garmin via cable but does bounce out so ram a bit of cocktail stick in ..loads on ebay...
It also charges stuff with engine running or compressor for flatties or punctures for us with tubes ..
Or buy a cheap garmin etrex 20 runs for 2 days of a couple of batteries ...

Re: Charging socket
This would be a better bet and similar to what Tramp uses.

Have a search through as there various types and ways to mount them handle bars, on dash and in dash.
If you want USB connectivity then you could use one of these

Re: Charging socket
Even better idea get that dual unit and a bottle or two of wine and get your self round to Phil's.
Let him fit it for you

Re: Charging socket
Thanks. The cigarette lighter one looks perfect. So that wouldn't draw any power from the battery when not in use?zimtim wrote: ↑Tue Feb 13, 2018 6:49 pm This would be a better bet and similar to what Tramp uses.
