Re: 42ltr or 58 ltr
I have a 36 litre top box and 2 35 litre panniers and happily do 2 weeks away or more if needed and as Giles states you'll just take crap you don't need or won't use just because you have space

If you join the Tiger800 forum you can find loads of posts and photos of both. There is a huge thread just showing hard luggage options.
FWIW If you plan on doing a lot of filtering the 58l will make the back of your bike a lot wider and it could also interfere with any top opening hard panniers you may fit later.

I use the mirrors as helmet holders with a small bike lock through chin  or through luggage...if you can carry enough for 3 days it will last a very long trip just think 3 day cycles :woohoo: ...inside out and back to front :pinch: ....

Have a look at both side by side. The 52L is massive way too big for a bike IMO ive got the Givi 42L outback and that is fine and will hold a lot of crap, or one helmet with not much other stuff in! and you can strap other stuff on top if needed. (thumbs)

Think of all the petrol cans he'll need in a 58 litre top boxRandG wrote:It's the nc 500 you're doing not rtw ffs.
His 2 helmets won't get near his top box

Re: 42ltr or 58 ltr
I like a lot of camping trips and have 2 x 42 litre panniers and a 40 litre top box.
I get all the stuff in the panniers [including a folding bbq and chair!] and pop on the tank bag for the few essentials. I have been off 3 times this year and not taken the top box at all. I do take it to France but it travels empty so I have space for food pick ups along the way and is useful for light items.
A change of tent this year means the poles are too long to go in the panniers so the tent poles and outer get strapped on while the ground sheet and inner go in the panniers. The previous tent went in the panniers with everything else. If I do need more space I can just put the complete tent on the seat.
I much prefer the bike handling without the top box on, feels much more planted with everything in panniers and tent on the seat doesn't upset that.
I mostly use the top box in town and for that have also thought of the 58 litre box but really only for storing bike gear when off the bike.
