Giant Loop v AltRider

Post by boboneleg »

So as not to clog up Simons 'small is beautiful' thread and to save Johnny from a brain fart  I have started a new thread.

I am in the market for some luggage and like the idea of the throwover horseshoe shaped bags. So I am looking at the Giant Loop Coyote 2 and the AltRider Hemisphere.

I was all set to get the Coyote 2 as it now comes with '100% WATERPROOF COYOTE DRY PODS' according to the blub but having seen Simons Hemisphere that seems a good alternative.

Anyone else want to chime in with their experience of either set up?

Hold yer horses! If you can wait until the end of March, then I'd hold out for the new Mosko Moto http://www.moskomoto.com/ Reckless system, far better than the Giantloop that I have. They are currently having a final kit test before production. My mate has just bought their new pannier and his comment was that they are like Rhino skin!

Oh yes I forgot, also consider kit from these guys http://www.21brothers.eu/21brothers.eu/ROGAL_40L.html

Basically is copied Wolfman and Giantloop kit but considerably cheaper. My mate has the copied Wolfman bags and said they're really well made.

Come Harty, I want to know how it's better than a Giant loop, I've 30k on my old loop, and was just about to buy the latest version coz I've been happy with it..... You and Snowy are plugged into the latest kit, I always get kit envy when I see you both..... I don't want to have that feeling again! Dreading seeing your XR, and all its lovely farkles......

You're welcome to buy my sloppy seconds GiantLoop Milly ;-)

The thing I like about the Reckless system is the fact that you can leave it on your bike and just pull out the large inner bags at the sides, plus it's more adjustable at the top and it's that bit bigger than the GL.

Sneak preview XR porn for you...

Ive got the Giant Loop Coyotee Bob. Good bit of kit, but nothing lasts with me. Recon its got one or two trips left in it before it has to be replaced. And TBH, Ive not used it that much. Getting a nice shiny new (to me) bike on Friday. Maybe I need to upgrade my kit to go with my new image!

As you know (and as you point out, its been rectified) the bag isn't waterproof. I have other dry bags that I put in the pods so no real issues.

My straps that hold the bag on the bike are really badly frayed. As they are stitched onto the bag I recon when they go it will be game over for the bag. And one on the plastic buckles has snapped so I have to tie a knot, not ideal.

And having to waterproof the seams when new is rubbish. All my seams are split now and peeling away.

Still, ace bit of kit. Not cheap though. Heres it on my old Husky, all the gear for a 10 day trip loaded.

I bought a pair of the Mosko Moto outback panniers just before Christmas - great pieces of kit, really well made.

One thing to take into account is import dues - unless they now have a UK stockist/distributor you will have to purchase direct from them in the US. The duty I paid was £131 - I think the panniers plus a couple of their bolt on pouches came to almost $500.
