Re: crf250 Rally
I've got one of these that I'm thinking of selling. I've not used it in the past 18 months and its just taking up space in the garage. Mine has the outback rear pannier frames. Great bike that I used on all the green lanes around Surrey and a few trips to Salisbury Plain. I graduated to an Africa twin.

Re: crf250 Rally

I have come to think, after a few years of ownership of a crf250L, that it is best to keep the crf's as near standard as possible.
I tried to make it into a `proper` trail bike, but just using basic and cheap changes, not the full blown amendments.
I lowered the suspension a bit,

.. lowered the gearing a bit,

.. and put more knobby tyres on, but in the end it was worse on road and worse on trails, or at least nowhere a good as a proper trail bike or enduro.. .. Hondas idea was always a good average balance.
The trend now, in tyres for the 250 crf's, is Dunlop D606 rear, MT21 front. I got MT21's front and rear, hoping to do a lot of back road work , but on trails, the rear does in fact squirm all over the place up hill.

Other combinations of makes seem quite popular too, but i will just go D606 rear next time, as the front is not too bad.
You will know that the suspension is horrendous; ok for the road [even with oem tyres] with a light rider, but off road, downright dangerous!
I lowered the rear an inch by drilling a hole in the u clamp of the shock 19mm higher, but although lowered, it is still awful. Minky likes the YSS rear shock, as it is fine, and not too expensive.
Once i did the rear, the front was actually frightening, I put k -tech spring in,
o no .. race tech

plus 10w oil on the one fork, leaving the other fork oem .... is a bit better, but still not very good overall.
The clutch has held out so far, but i have not used the bike for months, due to a horrible clacking noise from the engine, .. money and time to fix, so unused at home lol. The crf250L had a new clutch plates ck1313 I think, plus Barnet HD springs. which cured the slip.

The L was better handling than the Rally [off road], as you can feel the weight of the [rally] fairing on the front, causing plunging dip etc.

the Rally has a better engine tho, and rides better all round.
I shouldn't have sold the L, but I got a eBike which was just in time for covid lol.

I hope i can get the Rally back up running right again, as i am beginning the miss the trails again.

Re: crf250 Rally
Not sure, Richard .. either that or the timing? chain.
One day it suddenly went really noisy, but was still riding ok.
May even be my hearing? Lol
I was so pissed off I couldn't even look at the bike for months. Then when I did fire it up it didn't seem half so bad, but was not turning over so freely.
Probably a minor issue .. I hope .. but been busy, then all this rain, so not looked at the bike ... but beginning to miss the trails now lol.
Hope you doing OK btw .. and have a good new year.

Re: crf250 Rally
I meant cam chain tensioner
As they are known to fail on these ..
.. bear in mind this engine was quiet and perfectly smooth, before ..

Re: crf250 Rally
Had not used the Rally for the best part of a year, as busy with garden work for daughter and, most importantly, the engine had suddenly gone very noisy. Been depressed beyond belief, as also been in hibernation through the winter so far, but suddenly made the effort to try for an MOT for the crf 250 Rally, plus advice on the `noise`.
Mechanic recons there is no noise (so what can i hear then) its just the enclosing fairings reflecting the engine noise?? .. he put his hand over the exhaust, and yes, it was as quiet as a swiss watch ???? Anyway .. I aint gonna argue with good news, and got the MOT ((£29) and later, the TAX (£47 for the year ...extortionate, lol) and even didnt need to put petrol in as i used the year-old E10 petrol still in the tank .. even started first time after a year, lol.
so ??!!??.. er .. I can use it again,.. me little brain got to get used to it, lol .... but it is Still noisy as hell and not so eager as before.??
...............................................................................................................................................................................................
on a different note .. anyone got, or knows where i can get.. a rh stanchion for my NC750s dct 2015 model???
(reasonably priced)

Re: crf250 Rally
Greetings Gary,
As an idea might you be able to record/video the noise for it to be played on here for basic comparison purposes?
Alternatively, might somebody else with knowledge of the bike be able to listen to it and compare against their own?
Perhaps use a screwdriver placed against the tensioner body to listen as a stethoscope?
TTFN
Hugh.
