Need to know what 'cheap' means, Patrick...

KTMs do tend to be pretty tall in the seat, in my experience, even an EXC125. And maybe a bit single-purpose for what you're after.

You'll want something you're happy to crash and repair if you're learning trails for the first time. Power is not the point. A 10bhp 125 will be fine on the dirt until you get better. Decent knobblies or at least good dual purpose tyres are important.

Spend money on some decent body protection and a good pair of enduro/mx boots. If you're anything like me, you will use them a lot... :D

You must be fairly local to me, have you found anywhere decent to ride one?

the best solution I could see was a trials bike. There are quite a few local clubs so you could ride most sundays in normal times. My intention is to try riding my beta alp 200 in the north lincs classic trials

Same question again of what counts as cheap.

My Mrs is still on about selling her derbi terra adventure, if it was up to me I'd keep it but I'm already keeping her other 125 and apparently 5 bikes I don't ride is too many.

Is very good advice....any trail/adventure bike is pretty much defined by its tyres...all the bling in the world won't help you at all if you are riding a muddy track with novelty condom tread pattern 'enduro' tyres.

Equally, there's no point in having a 125 bhp bike and using all that performance on the road if you are going to be firing chunks of tread off your knobblies and into the landscape.

I'm loving my Serow 225.

It's small & light, can plug along on the motorway if needed & is a dream to maintain.

And there's not much to go wrong with it either.....

I have an XR125 and it's just the job. You can always put your feet down, if you drop it you can just put it up.
It can hop up everything and it's cheap enough not to worry about scratching it.
And now, Harry, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.
