.
Back in 2016 I started a new job, and it was a good excuse to upgrade from the DR350. Without really trying I spot a clean-looking DRZ-E up for sale locally, popped over to check it out, and ended up buying it! It looked tidy, ran smoothly, and appeared to have been looked after with clean oil, and new cables, chain and sprockets. So it all seemed good.
Or was it....
Well, it was a sound bike, but had been worked on by people(s) severely lacking in mechanical skills, or indeed any common sense!
A quick trip up the road to check things out properly, was indeed just a quick trip as I had to turn back home straightaway - the front end felt terrible, really skittish and light feeling, very unlike a DRZ, what was going on? Aha, some bright spark had pushed the forks down in the clamps, maybe to gain a bit of height on the bars, and screwed up the geometry. This on its own would perhaps not have completely messed up the handling but it was made much worse from the very hard forks, which was easily resolved by undoing the air bleed screws, both of which were very full of compressed air and let out quite a hiss!
No wonder the previous owner didn't get on with the bike... With the normal geometry restored the next road test was also short-lived when I noticed smoke pouring off the exhaust header pipe! What the heck?!
Ah, I remembered the PO saying something about the header pipe touching the oil breather catchment box and why he had covered the pipe in exhaust wrap.
Instead of fixing the problem.....
Exciting picture eh! This was just a short section, there must have been about 3m of the stuff!
It didn't take long to discover the oil breather catchment box had a hole melted in the bottom, and not surprisingly was leaking oil straight onto the pipe. This thing:
So that had to be repaired, and the header pipe straightened back to its normal state as it had obviously been knocked and bent, and hence why it was touching the catchment box, doh.

Right, let's try again! Up the road and it's running sweet - give it some beans, and hmm, it doesn't seem quite as responsive as I would expect? Back home and strip the carb - my suspicions are confirmed to find the pumper jet diaphragm is split, not that surprising as the bike is 14 years old after all.
While in there the rest of the carb was given a good clean, and find something interesting (to me! ) - the Keihin FCR has roller bearings on the throttle pivot, which I have not seen on any other carb, and obviously contributes to it's nice smooth action.
Finally out for a proper ride and the bike is running superbly, the controls light and smooth, and my favourite CRD pipe that came with the bike sounds crisp and meaty without being excessively loud. But hang on, what's this - another problem! - a noticeable oil leak from the starter gear cover!
Not bad enough to shorten the ride, and once back at base the cover is removed for inspection:

What the actual F... - the o-ring was not just split but a big chunk of it completely missing!!
But wait, also missing is one of the bushes, and a thrust washer for the starter gear spindle!
Bloody hell what kind of numpty has been working on this bike! As I wanted to use the bike the next day I found a suitable washer and made a temporary bush from a bit of copper pipe.
Some instant gasket bodged up the section of missing o-ring and job's a good 'un.
Parts ordered and subsequently fitted, several more rides followed, and all was good.
Until.... something else happened!

Interesting story and great pics to explain the issues. I love tinkering with my bike but cant bear it when someone has replaced old bolts with odd ones and Philips screws etc, I guess its the ol ocd kicking in but it has to be right or it will bug me for ever....I can be a bit ham fisted but wont tackle a job that I haven't watched a thousand you tube videos of!!!
