What would put you off buying a GS1200/1250?

Post by SteveW »

In my opinion these bikes are the best long distance mixed road touring motorcycles you can buy, I've had a couple myself.
But buying a bike isn't that straightforward is it?
Not everyone buys a GS1200 do they.
Why didn't you buy one?
Too expensive, You don't want to be associated with whole the GS-Twat-suit-Touratech-thing, Too heavy, Too Tall, To much internet crap about parts failures etc.....
Or are there just better bikes out there for you?
Me? I'd have gone straight round to BMW and bought the latest most expensive GS1250 they had......but my budget was £6500 so I've just bought a second hand Super Tenere for £6250.

When I was in the market for buying a new bike, I had a lot of test rides, including the 1250, to me it was a bit meh, but I’m not a fan of the boxer twin. The Africa Twin lacked ‘road presence’ and then I rode on of these:-

..and I was smitten.

My friend went down the GS1250 route, for the reason ‘they’re the best selling bike and therefore they’re the best’ I asked him when he was selling his flash car and buying a Fiesta, ‘cos they’re the best selling car...

Far to expensive price wise, and they are VERY bulky size wise....!! Too cumbersome....!!! Too hefty...!!!

Something between 400cc and 950cc engine size wise is all you'll probably require nowadays. Instead I'd buy either one of these machines instead of the HUGE bulky BMW, V-Strom 650 - XT660Z - 950 Ducati.

When my 1050 Tiger got written off(not my fault--about 14 months ago)--I decided that it was a good opportunity to go smaller--the Triumph was a lump, and to be honest didn't handle that well (my son ,who doesn't mince words, said it lifts the front wheel ok, but the steering is vague in corners--and I had to agree, despite it having a hyperpro conversion). I decided to go for an old 600 Transalp because a) it was cheap, b) in great condition, c) I would ride it more often as it wasn't "precious", and d) it actually handled BETTER than the Triumph--and I forgot--you can rarely use 100 bhp and about 60 bhp is more than adequate these days for cruising well in excess of most limits. I don't regret going "smaller" one bit--I can wheel the thing around, plant my feet when fully loaded etc, get 55 mpg and have a very comfortable riding position. Additionally there are no service costs and spares are readily available--and its not full of electrickery ! I have also resurrected a very cheap (but nice) CB500--and that handles even better and will easily top 100mph on the track--its also very light and low for a 500--we have a genuine 1981 R80 G/S in the family at 168 kg--now that IS a proper go anywhere bike that you can also pick up. I'm not stuck in the dark ages but I simply fail to see the logic of spending 12k plus on a rarely used toy to usually say "look at me!"--and I could if I wanted to! I wonder how many of us actually use more than about 2/3rds throttle for 90% plus of our trips--and with a smaller bike you can actually use all the throttle without it biting you.

I bought a new one in 2016, brilliant bike to ride, quick, handles great but quite frankly I could wait to get rid of it. It was just another GS and I hated that fact the fact you were immediately categorised as tosser, it was everything I hate about the corporate image of the brand.
