Tenere 700 wheels & tyres

So having tried the standard fitment tyres off road and found them a bit lacking in sideways grip in mud I thought how much would it cost to have a second set of wheels with off road tyres fitted and ready to swap on? So I contacted the dealer where I purchased and asked them to cost it up having already done a web search and found no readily identifiable options. Turns out you can't buy ready to use wheels but you can buy all the components and build one or have one built by someone who knows what they're doing - that plan will cost you £2384 plus change including VAT for a pair of wheels that have everything but the rubber - so disk rotors, drive cogs, spokes, you know the basics!!

Do any of you out there know of other manufacturers wheels or other Yam bike wheels that'd fit or is it too early for anyone to have found that out yet? Failing that what tyres are you running on or planning to use?

Standard tyres are Pirelli Scorpion Rally - 90/90 21 54V front and 150/70 18 70V rear - maybe they'd grip better in the soft stuff if I'd lowered the pressures - life's an ongoing experiment

Yeah, difficult one. You can rarely get hold of wheels for new bikes without spending heaps of cash buying factory spares.

You basically need to have patience and wait for the following things to happen:

1) For your bike to become very popular and sell in large numbers so that spares become plentiful and cheap

2) Sadly, for people to start crashing their bikes and for breakers to start parting them out

3) Sadly, for people to start stealing them and putting parts on to the secondhand market.


I used to race early Yam R6s and you could get a set of wets on wheels with discs etc for about £300. Loads to choose from most weeks on ebay. The vast majority would have been on crashed road bikes, but no doubt some were from nicked bikes - you could never really tell.

But I wanted a spare set of rims for my Bimota YB8E and never ever found any (they only made 321 bikes ! ). I doubt a single pair comes up for sale anywhere worldwide in a year.

What might be worth doing is starting a discussion on the relevant owners' forum (one will start up soon if it doesn't exist already) and ask the question which wheels from other models can be modified to fit your bike. It's often just a matter of making up spacers. Somebody will ding a wheel soon and start exploring how to replace it, and hopefully post up their findings.

You could buy a pair of genuine wheel hubs and then have some Exel rims laces to them.
Aftermarket discs may already be available, if not, it won’t be long.

You might find that a specialist UK company like Talon or Central Wheels would be prepared to make up some suitable wheels at a discount for you as they could effectively use them as prototypes.

If you were going to have wheels built onto hubs you'd provided , you might as well get tubeless wheels made , bet its a lot cheaper than Yamaha's joke price

For the time being fit some Pirelli MT21 Tyres

You could buy genuine hubs and aftermarket rims, but I doubt you would get change from £1500 for a pair

At the bike show last week I priced up with Central Wheels a new pair of 21/18 SM Pro & spokes onto some existing XR 400 hubs I already have and it was £525 - Excel rims were another £120 on top

I'd go with the find a suitable tyre advice (e.g.. MT21's) and just get used to the inevitable (but nothing that can't be worked around) compromises.
I spent a fraction of what this exercise would cost you on Talon wheels with mooses for my CRF250X and spend way too much time wishing I'd used the other set when theres too much road work or not enough grip or whatever

Constantly changing the wheels is also more of a faff than i expected!

Rally Raid are offering wheels fitted with a tubeless system ready to go (minus tyres and disks etc) for around £1500 ish
