Tracer 900 GT

So I need a bike, that can get me to work, not cost too much to service and will protect me from the elements.

Looked at the Duke Multi 950s, but the £1,000 valve service frightens me.

BMW S1000XR, looks nice but had some conflicting reports.

Africa Twin, don't make me laugh, or cry.

Whats the Yamaha Tracer 900 GT like.

Bearing in mind, no off road, but 46mile a day one way commute. Consisting over 10 mile Motorway, 15 miles London Traffic and 16miles, nice A and B roads.

Cheers si

Well my DL 650 just about kept up with one in a straight line recently, if that helps.

I had a 700 Tracer and thought it was super.
I’ve ridden an MT-09 albeit for only about 10 miles and thought that the engine was very nice. Torquey and smooth.

Yamaha Servicing will be way less than BMW, Ducati etc.

Have a test ride. If you’re also looking for a new dealer I can thoroughly recommend Woodford Motorcycles in London E18.
Ask for Alan or Pete and tell them that The Curator sent you. (Another nickname from another time).

What's the rear mudguard like...assuming it has one.

Reason for asking is, I once attended a meeting on a wet day on my KTM. One other delegate had motorcycled there. He had a Triumph Street Triple, and his paperwork in a 'waterproof' rucksack. We'd come similar distances.

He looked a mess. There was mud all over his jacket, his waterproof rucksack was holding a lot of water and had ruined his paperwork, and water had run down his back from where it had dripped down his collar.

My paperwork was fin (it had been in my top box) and I was warm and dry. He was miserable and humiliated.

I wouldn't contemplate commuting on a bike unless it had a proper rear mudguard: not a numberplate on a stick or a numberplate hanging off the back of the swinging arm.

As someone who had a Tracer 900 and currently has an ATAS I'd say they are different beasts. The Tracer can be an absolute flying machine in the right hands but I'm a twin man and I don't mean Africa Twin, I mean twin cylinder engines, less hard work, easier to ride and for me at my age, more enjoyable.

Suspension on the Tracer was brutal, they my have fixed that since I had one, I don't know but in regards your comments about the Honda, I don't understand that, have you seen how many GS bikes failed, now go take a look at any weekend meet or rideout and see how many GS's you see.

Unfortunately it seems some AT's have suffered some issues but what is the proportion against how many they have sold. Those who have had issue have shouted very loudly, and possibly rightly so but my guess would be that those are a very small minority.

Now before you start thinking I'm only sticking up for them because I have one, well I'm not as I'm trading mine in this month but what I will say is, the DCT is the best system I have ever ridden on any bike, and believe me I've had dozens.
