Looking at a very well spec'd x challenge that has 35,000 miles in it.
Looking at opinions good and bad from anyone that's owned one.

Bmw g650x challenge opnion
I had one for 6 years, when they first came out, nothing went wrong with it
Good bikes overall
Shocks are better for changing to a spring unit
Forks need the same work you undertook on the F8GS you had
Make sure the clutch cover and innards have been changed for a later 2009 G650 XCountry version with the steel inserts
Cush drive rubbers are discontinued - but a chap on ukgser has had some aftermarket ones made
Good bikes if not a little quirky
Maybe a 690 is a better bike overall

For what i want i like them. As JB says, needs some mods but sounds as if yours may already have had some of them done.
690 maybe a little more focussed. Never had one but also meant to be good.

ive a X Challenge & a rally specked 690, the XC feels quite weedy in comparison , but the XC is nice & light & can handle most things asked of it , the very small tank is a bit of a problem so i have a rotopax, like a previous answer says changing to a rear spring is advisable , the rear subframe is made of cheese mine broke 28 miles into the desert, but still love mine , i am torn on which one to keep as my 690 is more bike than i could use & the XC is good but no so inspiring
